What Liquids Can I Feed a Puppy With Parvo?

"What are some fluids and liquids that I can give to my 2-month-old puppy Blue if he tested positive for parvo and worms? I also need to get some recipes for diets that he can eat. I already took him to the vet in town but they said they can't do anything and it's my job to help keep fluids down.

I've been giving him 2cc famotidine by syringe and 1/4 of a pill that they gave to me for him (they were donated medicines that they had left over). I also found some rimadyl 25 mg; would that be safe for me to give to him, or will it help him come around?" —Jessica

Take Your Puppy Back to the Vet

About 90% of the puppies that have parvovirus and are not treated are going to die, so all veterinarians I know of will put the dog on fluids if the family can afford to do so.

If you put the puppy on fluids, give medications to decrease vomiting, treat any roundworm infection, and give antibiotics, a third of them still die. The best treatment we have found is to put the dogs on food immediately.

What to Feed a Puppy With Parvo

There are many benefits to trying to get food into a puppy with parvo. Feeding a puppy with parovirus:

  • makes them less nauseous
  • keeps the GI system working
  • reduces inflammation in the bowel
  • feeds the cells in the bowel so that they can recover faster
  • decreases the chances of bacteria growing in excess in the bowel
  • stops hunger pains and a rapidly contracting bowel

Liquid Diet

If your dog will not eat, you can use a liquid diet and feed with a syringe. You can purchase a diet like Hills AD or even make up his food at home if you cannot find AD.

To make up the homemade diet, use:

  • 1 cup boiled hamburger or one large chicken breast
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 cup of water
  • 3 tablespoons cottage cheese
  • pinch of salt

Put all of the ingredients in your blender and blend them thoroughly so that the ingredients are mixed up. This is NOT a diet that you can give long term, but tit will keep your puppy going when he is recovering.

Nasogastric Tube

This article from Today's Veterinary Nurse will tell you how to feed a puppy with a nasogastric tube, but it is not a good idea to do this if you have no one to show you the first time.

Worms in puppies can be treated at home with a product like Nemex.

Nemex Puppy Dewormer

If you have not already done so, get a bottle of Nemex or other puppy dewormer and treat him immediately.

You can keep going with the famotidine, but the rimadyl will not do any good.
