A Devon Rex Is the Best Choice for a Playful and Vocal Cat
The Devon Rex cat is one of the more popular cat breeds, and it makes a great pet for many reasons. This Yoda look-alike has pixie-like features and a short, curly coat. A very energetic cat, the Devon Rex is the best companion for those who want an active, playful pet.
Point of Origin: Foundation Cat and Geography
Kirlee is the ancestor of the breed and was the offspring of a curly-coated male and a straight-coated calico female cat born with a curly coat.
Initially, breeders thought the kitten was related to the Cornish Rex breed.
However, when he was bred with other Cornish Rex cats, the offspring all had straight coats. That’s when it was discovered that Kirlee was an entirely different breed with curly fur.
The "Devon" in the cat's name is derived from the place where he was born: Devonshire, England.
The Devon Rex is medium-sized and weighs between six to nine pounds. It has elfin characteristics such as large eyes, curly whiskers, and huge ears. The breed is extremely attractive because of its thick mane of curly hair.
There are some of these cats that slowly lose their curly coat while maturing, but the majority maintain their soft, dense coat for life.
This particular cat loves heat, so don’t be surprised if you find it curled up asleep near the television or a heater. It also enjoys cuddling with humans and loves sleeping with its owners.
Because of its impressive coat, your Devon Rex will also provide some warmth during cold weather and could be considered a living bed warmer.
Why These Cats Make Good Pets
The Devon Rex is very active and enjoys running around and jumping from one perch to another. Chew toys are a must to keep it from being bored and to provide mental stimulation, but it also needs lots of interaction from humans.
The old adage "curiosity killed the cat" holds true for this breed, as it is known for being somewhat mischievous and curious. It pokes its nose into places it shouldn't and gets into trouble. Be conscious of this, and make sure there is nothing the cat can get into that could harm it or that it could break or destroy.
Despite its impressive-looking coat, the Devon Rex cat is extremely low maintenance. Brush daily to keep the coat gleaming and wipe with a wet cloth if necessary to remove dirt or debris. Check and clean the ears as necessary.
Devons shed very little and have a reputation of being a good choice for allergy sufferers as they do not normally trigger an allergy or asthma attack. However, levels of tolerance vary from person to person, so if you are extremely sensitive, you may want to consult your doctor first before getting any cat, including a Devon Rex.
This particular breed is quite resistant to diseases and usually healthy throughout its life. Some common cat health problems of the breed are hip dysplasia, cardiomyopathy, and luxating patella. Take your cat to a veterinarian for regular check-ups and have it vaccinated according to the schedule prescribed by the vet to keep it in good health.
Before You Get a Devon Rex
Consider these things before deciding if the Devon Rex is the best choice for a household pet:
- They have large appetites and can become obese. Are you willing to commit to a lifetime of monitoring their diet?
- They are extremely active cats and require attention. Do you have the time to play and socialize with a pet?
- Because of their high energy level and need for human interaction, they cannot be left alone for long periods of time. Who will care for your Devon Rex if you travel or go on trips or vacations frequently?
After considering all the advantages and disadvantages of cat ownership, you may decide that the Devon Rex is the cat you've been searching for. Check at your local animal shelter or animal rescue organizations to see if there is one who needs a loving home or contact a local breeder to find your new companion.
Questions & Answers
What domesticated exotic cat can I legally own in Seattle, WA?
Great question, but it needs to be directed to government officials in your state or locality. Rules and regulations on exotic pet ownership vary widely from state to state. You should also check to see if any federal guidelines would affect your ownership of an exotic cat.
Are Devon Rex cats ok to be on their own for 8-10 hrs on their own?
Just like kids, each cat has his or her own personality. Some like to be left alone while others might need more attention. You are the best judge of your pets. If you leave them alone for long stretches of time, but notice inappropriate behaviors when you return home, it could be a sign of their need for human interaction.Helpful 3
