Names for Black Cats

Black cats can be of any breed or mix. They are often associated with witches, bad luck, and in some cases, good luck, so often when black cat names are given, they have a mystical feel. Other names are often derived from the word "black" in foreign languages—such as Ciara.

Most names on this list are not gender-specific, although there are a few black cat names that work for male cats, such as Voldermort or Ciar (which is the male form of Ciara), and female black cat names like Elvira or Hera.

A black cat's color can vary slightly, ranging from pure black to grey, with brown and "speckled" patterns. Pure black cats are often given names like Onyx or Ebony.

When picking names for cats, especially black ones, you should try to take the cat's character into account. While you can name your cat based on its color, you should try to decide on a name that fits. By observing your cat's traits and mannerisms, you should be able to pick the right name.

In the U.S., black cats are often associated with witchcraft.

In the U.S., black cats are often associated with witchcraft.

Black Cats in Folklore

  • Familiars: In the Middle Ages, the black cat was believed to be the familiar of a witch.
  • Bad/good luck: Depending on your culture, it is said that when a black cat crosses your path it is bad luck (U.S.) or good luck (U.K., Japan).
  • Death: Often, it is said that a black cat that sits on a sick person's bed signifies death.
  • Money: Stroking a black cat ensures wealth.

How to Choose a Name

  • Evasive or Elusive Cats: if your cat is evasive, elusive, and always seems to slink and hide, a suitable name may be Shadow or Casper.
  • Evil and Playful Cats: If your cat seems to be playful and perhaps a little evil, then names like Bela or Elvira might be more suitable.
  • Mystical Names: if your cat seems to know what you’re thinking and can speak volumes without making a sound, then you should consider Mystique, Witchy, or Wicca.

Note: Picking a name for your cat can be a difficult process. I suggest that you make a list of your top 20 names, observe your cat for a few days, and eliminate the ones that don’t fit—eventually, you’ll be able to narrow it down so you end up with the perfect black cat name.

I just remembered a black kitten my son adopted in 1980. We named him "Booger" because he was such a little booger. He hated to stay in the house and tore the place up if we went somewhere and left him inside.

We have a black cat called Roly-Poly-Oly-O. I have no idea why, except that he's fat and likes to curl up in a ball. (My mom named him)Roly's mom was black, too, and we called her Catniss. (Like from the Hunger Games, but Cat instead of Kat)

Ace or Clover might be funny because it's a little bit of a paradox :3 like black cats are supposed to be bad luck, but aces and clovers are supposed to be good luck.

I call my little black cat lucky because she never gave me bad luck before.

Patricia miller on June 10, 2015:

I got a cat 3 years ago her name was Doti. My brother changed it to Boo and then we saw Monsters Inc. And I added Kitty,so she's BooKitty. The New cat I found doesn't have a name yet. He's sweet. Laid back and very vocal ,I'm thinking Phantom or Zorro maybe Jag. My last black cat was named Spooky. I also have a grey cat named smoochie. Your list was helpful.

FluffyGiggles on April 30, 2015:

My family just aquired two ADORABLE black kittens with long fur. My sis got mad when i named my baby Mynx because it sounded too much like hers, Jinx. It fits two adorable twin girls though right? Thanks!

Luvtoo Write from Chicago, IL on February 12, 2014:

I see you have Eclipse on your list and I thought I was being original when I name him. I named him Eclipse because he has the shape of a crescent moon on his belly. Sweetest cat ever!

A very fun article ! :) Thank you. Have a great weekend. Voted up.

FlourishAnyway from USA on August 17, 2013:

I like your unusual list! I have 3 black cats (all unrelated). Two are named Jamal because we thought they were the same cat for awhile, and the other one is Samuel. I sure wished we had been more inventive.

Randi Benlulu from Mesa, AZ on July 19, 2013:

Fun list and hub! As the momma of 1 black, 1 gray, 1 (spotted) white, 1 brown and white, I didn't end up naming them by their colors but I really enjoyed all these ideas! Thank you for this!

John David from Middle America on June 18, 2013:

I too enjoy the name Lucky, as it goes against the popular myth of black cats.. which are beautiful I might add. A family member of mine has one named LUNA, which I think is great!

We have had a couple black cats now, one was named Casey and one was Jack. Nothing at all relating to the black color lol. I also had a black horse growing up, her name was Magic and that was a little more fitting for a black animal.

FullOfLoveSites from United States on June 17, 2013:

We used to have a black cat named Mello; my sister named him after a character in the anime series Death Note. :))

Jinx is my most favorite in your list. :)

Barbara Fitzgerald from Georgia on June 15, 2013:

Love Mr. Norris and Spanky! Are they black too? Great hub voted thumbs up!

Doris James MizBejabbers from Beautiful South on May 31, 2013:

What a bunch of interesting names. I think Blackie, Smokey, and Shadow are too common. Black cats are my favorite cat, so I guess I was a witch in a previous life. My current black cat is a long hair named Tas. He and his mother came to our house on Halloween Day, 2001, when he was still nursing. He was also teething and very irritable, so I named him Tasmanian Devil. After he got over his teething, he has the best disposition of any cat of any color I’ve ever had. He looked and acted just like a little black monkey, so he was renamed Tasmanian Monkey, Tas for short. Voted you up and useful.

idigwebsites from United States on February 21, 2013:

Ok! I'd like to have a black cat! And stroke him/her in hopes to get rich, hehehehe. I like your choices of names. I'd like to add Vader to your list because you've already got Darth. :)

Voted up, interesting. :)

Rachel from Ohio on January 12, 2013:

My 17 year old black cat is Lilith, or Lily for short. She is...well, she's a Lilith! She's a very no-nonsense kitty! When she requires some sort of assistance, like the food or water dishes aren't full enough, she will let you know. Other than that, do not disturb the Queen!

Magster1959 on September 14, 2012:

I've had 4 black cats, 3 male and 1 female. The males: Smack, Binkley and Sweets. The female: Etta. Smack loved to give kisses (Peanuts Snoopy always gave the Smack when he kissed someone!), Binkley was after the Bloom County cartoon strip character(his hair on his head stuck straight out!). Sweets was such a loving precious soul, so sweet..well..there you have it! And Etta, "at last" I got a female cat...(Etta James' big hit!). I always go by personality with the exception of my orange cat, he was Julius (Orange Julius drinks!).

Yahaira299 on July 12, 2012:

Ahh, finally i found the perfect name for my cat. Bela, i thought of naming her Chino because her eyes look so tiny & separated,. But now i have the name Bela (:

Thalia Brussow on July 11, 2012:

We named our black kitten Lillith. Some people believe that when man was created, the first woman wasn't named Eve but Lillith.

Lillith somehow turned "evil" and became a demon, so then Eve was made. Thus our black kitten is "the mother of demons" so to speak, haha :) Love cats!

When I tried to think of a name to suit my black cat five years ago, I could only think of three different names. That's quite a list you came up with. Great fun.

Ann1Az2 from Orange, Texas on June 14, 2012:

Enjoyed your hub - I have 4 cats, 2 of which are black with white markings. I named one Valentino because he is such a baby and a love. The other one's name is very original - Tuxedo. lol His white markings are such that he looks like he has a white shirt on under a tuxedo - 4 white feet and a white chest and belly. I could have used your hub when I was naming all of my cats!

lol we have a black cat and got him as a kitten. We did as you have suggested here and watched the cat to see his personality and his traits. He liked to hide and jump out from random places so we called him Houdini. Magic related I guess.

Roberta Kyle from Central New Jersey on January 25, 2012:

fascinating that you can find so many names for a black cat-- quite a feat, but I do think that " whitey" is a bit off the mark lol-- fun hub. Really enjoyed it.

We have a black and white chihuahua called Bella - she was born on St Patrick's day! So she's a Mexican Irish Italina dog!

FloraBreenRobison on January 24, 2012:

Bella meas beautiful in Italian if there are two L's.

We had a black cat when I was a baby to toddler who was old by then. Mom took him over when his former owner couldn't take him with her travelling. Mom already had raised his sister (she ran away at some point)

Anyway, this black cat had a well established name. I guess he must have had an adorable face when he was a kitten because his name was *Face.*

My other cats have been black and white, black and grey tabby (current), calico, and orange tabby.

There was someone I know who called his black cat spyder - with that spelling. :( Poor kitty.

pinkydoo from New York on January 24, 2012:
