Simon has two cats with unique names. He's happy to share his tips so others can choose the best names for their cats and other pets.
Orange cats (or ginger cats) are among the most popular cat types there are and have cropped up all over the world in cartoons and TV shows (Garfield being perhaps the most famous orange cat.). There is no orange breed of cat, as the color can be found in many different breeds. Predominantly, they are part of the tabby cat family.
While many argue that orange cats are among the most charismatic types of cat, with a personality that often matches their color, there really isn’t anything to set them aside from the normal tabby cat. Generally, they are easy to domesticate, are friendly and warm, love to play and have a little bit of the devil in them at times.
Thus when deciding a great cat name for your orange tabby you should take into account his or her character, not just the coloring; it’s easy to simply name the cat Ginger or Marmaduke, but you may find a better fit based on their characteristics.
How to Choose a Name for an Orange Cat
- Evil and Playful Cats: Orange cats often seem to have the devil in them and are often causing trouble or in trouble. What better name can you think of that Prince Harry or even Ron Weasley—both of whom are boisterous ginger headed men!
- Celtic Names: Orange hair is synonymous with Celts and particularly the Irish, therefore a great name for an orange cat might be Flynn or Rory.
- Typical Names: of course if you cannot work out what character your orange cat has you can use some of the funny cat names or atypical ginger cat names like Orange Juice, Carrot, Tabasco or Ginger. Of course, you could confuse everyone by naming your cat Snowy.
- Famous Names: does your orange cat exude fame? Is he or she destined to be a star? The why not use a famous name like Marmaduke or Garfield?
Picking names for any cat is difficult at the best of time. Sometimes it’s not obvious what character your cat has and you may need to pick out a list of 10 or 20 names first and then gradually reduce the number until you find the name that fits. The gender of the orange cat usually doesn’t matter but there are a couple of names that are more appropriate for females such as Lucy or Tulip. More masculine names like Ferris or Oscar also fit well.
With a little time to observe your cat, you’ll soon come up with the perfect name.
Orange Cat Folklore
- Good Luck: Dreaming of a ginger or orange cat will bring luck with money and business.
- Myth: It is is not true that all orange cats are male, but quite a few people believe this! There do tend to be more orange male cats, but there are plenty of female orange cats.

I named our ginger/buff orange male furbaby cat Gingerbread. We (my husband and I) nicknamed him Gingy or Ginge.
That cat name Gingerbread is not on your list. Consider adding it.
A few people have taken delight in the cat name Gingerbread when we've shared that with them.
Our cat happened to be a Christmas present only because my Mom had promised me another cat and she wanted to pay me the money back after we got our furbaby from a TNR rescue home on December 8, 2014. So Gingerbread was a before Christmas name for him and his beautiful fur is a buff orange.

My orange cat is nearly 18 and his name is Rascalndear. Rascal for short. He's an amazingly hardy cat and a great hunter (fixed of course). I know our time together is numbered... so I cuddle a lot with him and he loves it. I also give him a little spinal massage regularly and feed him less kibbles and more soft food lately.

I have been visited by feral cats for several years simply because I put out wet/dry food for them early evening 365. They drift in and out for months, disappear and are replaced by a new crew, usually two or three at a time, sometimes joined by a lone-skunk or opossum. Recently a young orange tabby appeared. He/she reacts as though it has poor eye-sight and will look like it's mewing but no sound comes out. I'm wondering if these might be traits known for this breed. Any way they all have kept the mouse population down for which I give thanks to this wonderful and mysterious animal .

Good range of choices of orange cat names.
I used to have an orange cat and I named him Atari. I know it's not really related to his fur color, it just sounded great on him. (or on any cats of different color) :)

I named my orange male tabby cat "Georgie". It's a tough sounding name and we all know orange cats are definitely not pushovers!

This is so fun to read. Our beloved orange cat was named Butterscotch. I just gave my son an orange kitten for his 20th birthday- he is moving into his first apartment. The SPCA named it Zumba and we've been brainstorming other names. I'm glad I came across your hub and look forward to reading more of your hubs while you are in the apprenticeship!
d.william from Somewhere in the south on July 29, 2012:
Great hub. I have had cats all my life, but i never name them until i have them a while, then their name just comes to me, based on their behavior and actions. My orange cat was named Benji. He died last year of old age. I have made hubs of all of my cats and dogs to celebrate their lives.
The most i had at one time was 7 cats and 4 dogs. I am now down to two old dogs and one old cat. Each time one of them passes it is like losing a child, very sad and painful. But i know they all lived long and happy lives and gave me many years of pleasure and loving companionship.

I love this article, we found a kitten about amonth ago and I looked up cat name suggestions online. No real great search outcomes, so glad to see someone is putting together something worthwile to read! We decided to name our brown and white kitten Gizmo because it looked like Gizmo from the movie Gremlins....I did tell my kids not to get it wet or feed it after midnight....LOL! When I was a kid I did have an orange cat name orange juice (OJ) for short, and then about a year after I got it was when the OJ Simpson trial occurred...not such a good name after that!
Susan Keeping from Kitchener, Ontario on July 27, 2012:
I had an orange tabby called China Girl. But it had nothing to do with her colour. Her original name was Edeltraut before I adopted her.
Susan Zutautas from Ontario, Canada on July 27, 2012:
