I've been an online writer for over nine years—that's one year for every life an adorable cat supposedly has. I love cats!
Why Are Cats Cute?
Cats have a unique kind of cuteness. They show affection through their large green eyes, they depict playfulness by chasing laser lights and toy spiders, and they become a part of your home (read: furniture) by lying on their backs with their legs perched up in the air. Below are 10 reasons why cats make for the cutest pets.
- They are independent and spiritually detached.
- They love their siestas.
- They express their displeasure gracefully.
- They can easily be kept busy for hours.
- They use different tones of meows to manipulate you.
- They love being carried like a human baby.
- Cats own you and not vice versa.
- They think they're cleaner than you.
- They are extremely curious.
- They have a cute yet difficult personality.
1. They Are Independent and Spiritually Detached
Why is independence always confused with arrogance and coldness? Cats are great pets to have because they are not a liability in terms of care-taking. They poop where they are supposed to, sleep when they are bored (read: always), and eat when they feel like it. They don't come up to you with hungry eyes and paw you, forcing you to get up and feed them.
2. They Love Their Siestas
You can't play with cats anytime you want to. They have a certain mood and time cycle you must adhere to. Would you like it if someone stormed into your office and coerced you into playing Scrabble with them? Definitely not! Then how dare you disturb the feline creature from its slumber?
3. They Express Their Displeasure Gracefully
Are the cat food nuggets sour? Is the scratching post not rough enough? Is the bed too fluffy? Your cat will give you its instant opinions about the amenities that you have supplied. If the stuff is not good enough, you will be met with raging fury and intense annoyance (accompanied by a titled head and a long, loud meow). Aww. Cuteness.
4. They Can Easily Be Kept Busy for Hours
Apart from balls of wool (which they can get tangled in and never come out of), an iPad can also easily keep them busy for hours. Believe it or not, there are YouTube videos of cats doodling away with their paws on iPad screens and being highly amused with the colors.
If you don't want to sacrifice an iPad for your feline, a simple moth in the room should suffice! However, don't take it for granted that a cat will simply be amused by anything and everything. The games will only begin if, and only if, Her Feline Highness feels like being amused. Are we still wondering why they're adorable?
5. They Use Different Tones of Meows to Manipulate You
Whether cats want you to buzz off, entertain them, give them food, or show them TV, they have a specific way of meowing for each activity.
- A slow, lulled meow signals that they want you to pet them under their necks.
- A short purr lets you know that they are impressed.
- A loud, continuous meow is their way of asking you to "get the hell out of here!"
It is difficult to think of anything cuter than this. In fact, there should be a research lab out there somewhere trying to decipher different meows and make it a mainstream language.
6. They Love Being Carried Like a Human Baby
Do you find babies cute? If you do, you will find cats uber adorable too. Contrary to general assumption, cats love being carried, especially when you cradle them like babies. With their legs perched up in the air, they loved being lulled and hummed to sleep. And mind you, if they notice you're wearing amusing danglers or a neckpiece that catches their fancy, they have the official right to fling it apart.
7. Cats Own You and Not Vice Versa
Cats are super cute because they will eventually pick the spot that they love in the house. And you thought that you'd allot only a corner of the house to them? Sorry, not happening!
Also, if you've seen your cat rubbing against your legs in front of other people, don't mistake it as a sign of affection. Veterinary experts have suggested that it's the cat's way of indicating to other human beings and livings organisms that they own you!
8. They Think They're Cleaner Than You
Have you noticed that every time you pet and play with your cat, he/she will sit in a corner a few minutes later and get into a self-grooming session? They may even spend an entire hour licking every single square inch of their body. How cute is that? No shampoo expenses and no trips to the vet! It's almost like they're trying to tell you, "Get your dirty hands off me!"
9. They Are Extremely Curious
"Curiosity killed the cat" comes from a context. Cat owners will agree to this. When you come back from the grocery store and put all your shopping bags on the kitchen counter, the first person to check it out will be your kitty. She/he will hop on the counter, open the bag wide with their paw, and sniff until they are satisfied. Once you empty all the cartons, they'll even crawl into one and sit in it for some time!
10. They Have a Cute Yet Difficult Personality
"Cute yet difficult" is a confusing tag to describe a personality, but here goes. Cats won't salivate after just about anything that's offered to them. They have strong likes and dislikes, fetishes, pet peeves, and most importantly, their favorite people. For instance, if they lightly bite you, it's their way of acknowledging that you exist.
Other Miscellaneous Reasons Why Cats Are So Cute
- They will paw the fish inside the fishbowl.
- They will keep going in circles, chasing their own tails.
- They will curl up nowhere else but at your feet.
- If you take your cat to a new house, he/she will smell and physically check out every nook and corner of the house.
- Cats like the feeling of warmth underneath them, which is why we always seem to find them stationed atop a computer monitor.
- Since cats are fascinated by motion, they'll try to paw your fast-moving fingers zipping across the keyboard.
- They will sit on your best couch and lounge as if they own it, and because they look so cute sitting there rightfully, you wouldn't have the heart to shoo them off.

I adored this hub, and love kitties. Given half a chance I'd be one of those crazy cat ladies. You are entitled to keep #6 in your article--obviously you have a kitty who loves being carried. I'm sure you know, however, that some do not. I have had one of each. Sweet hub. Thanks for writing it.
Ada on February 16, 2018:
"They Love Being Carried Like a Human Baby" Ummm... no they don't. Every time I lift my cats they want to climb on my shoulders so they can observe their surroundings better. Cats don't usually like when people carry them like babies, they feel helpless and they are looking a way to get out of the situation... come on, it's cat owner's 101. Ok article otherwise, but number 6 was a total bs.
Lex Lewis on December 12, 2013:
Cats are truly the most loveable animals. My Kitty Nikki passed away a couple of months ago at age 15. I adopted her from a shelter when she was about 1 and 1/2. The first things she did when we got home and I opened her carrier was to climb into my lap and rub her face on my chin, and for the rest of her life she was the sweetest little girl in the world. When people would say that cats are "aloof" I would always know that they simply don't know cats. Cats don't grovel like dogs, but they are as loving as anyone can be. Thanks for a great blog.

princesswithapen (author) on January 14, 2012:
Cats definitely have their way when it comes to grabbing attention. You are right, dogs are clingy and crave for 'togetherness' as you've pointed out, which can be a warm feeling too!
Liz Green Berry from TX on January 14, 2012:
It's the slight air of unattainability that does it. No one wants to date the eager girl who is always throwing herself at everyone (dogs). They want the cute girl they think they can't have. My cats make me earn their attention. I tried to have a dog once for a week and it was like having a clingy, whiny baby. No matter what/who the pet - you have to be able to WALK AWAY.
Even in a human relationship, you are always more wellrounded, healthy individuals when you have your own lives/interests & don't always have to do everything TOGETHER all the time.
princesswithapen (author) on January 11, 2012:
Haha you are funny! I am glad this hub got your cat's approval. Carrying a cat can result in scratches, yes.
"..They do like to help me type, though.." - Surely this line of yours is going to bring smiles on the faces of each and every reader. You sure seem to have a way with words.
Thanks for stopping by and the awesome comment.
DougBerry from Abilene, TX on January 11, 2012:
One of my cats looked at the screen and said MREEOOW. Since she isn't one of the talkers, I assume that this means she approves.
And no, if you try to carry part of our cats like babies, they start wriggling and want down. Especially our Himalayans and Persians. They do not like to be held.
They do like to help me type, though.

princesswithapen (author) on November 13, 2011:
Yes, their eccentricity and nonchalant behavior make cats uber cute! Cats and dogs are both adorable animals and make great pets. For many, cats get the edge over dogs especially when it comes to the word 'cute'.
You should definitely do a hub about your 4 cats! I'm glad you liked this hub. Thanks!
Theresa Ast from Atlanta, Georgia on November 13, 2011:
Cats, cats, cats. It always surprises me to meet a dog person who doesn't like cats! I like both, but I prefer cats. I have four and they are all different and you described their eccentric traits and personalities so well. Fun Hub.
princesswithapen (author) on November 13, 2011:
Haha! Surely there are others in your home that find him cute!
Have you put up pictures of your cat here on HubPages?
Phil Plasma from Montreal, Quebec on November 12, 2011:
We have a blue point male Siamese and we are quite pleased with him. I don't think of him as cute as much as I think of him as friendly and other times as annoying when he is walking underfoot.
princesswithapen (author) on November 11, 2011:
Hi Hillbilly Zen
I too hope this hub converts many! Cats should be the definition of the word 'cute', don't you think?
Thanks for your warm comment!
princesswithapen (author) on November 11, 2011:
Great to know! I'm definitely going to check out those pictures.
Hillbilly Zen from Kentucky on November 11, 2011:
I can't understand why some people don't care for cats - maybe your Hub will "convert" a few! Voted up and beautiful because there's not a "cute" button ;)

Thanks Princess, he already is bringing great joy to us! I tried to post pics here but there isn't a link to be able to so I posted them in the Sandpit under Last one to post. Check them out if you get a chance!

As a fellow cat lover, I have to say Thank You for appreciating this hub.
You are a lucky woman! I bet many hubbers are envious of you right now.
As soon as you mentioned Amy I checked your page to see if you have written any more hubs about Amy. The last one I remember reading was titled "queen of the household". I see you've got a couple more which I am going to hop on to as soon as I'm done replying to your comment!
Funny you mention that because Flora's cat when she was young did not liked to be picked up either. I guess it is one of those typical cat personality traits - either they love it or they hate it.
You made the right decision in getting a kitten because the kitten is going to be the joy of your own and your family's life in the coming years. We'd all love to see pictures of Charlie Raisin!
Thanks heaps for appreciating this hub! There were so many more cute cat pictures but I finally managed to narrow down on a select few. As you can imagine, I spent more time looking for pictures than I took to write this hub. Haha, don't regret it one bit.
Glad to see another fellow cat lover on this hub. Their indifference is annoyingly adorable! Thanks for stopping by on this one.
Stephanie Marshall from Bend, Oregon on November 08, 2011:
Totally cute cat photographs! I'm a cat lover, so I guess an easy reader/commentator. I think you are right that what makes them so endearing is their feigned indifference. :)
Rose Clearfield from Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 08, 2011:
Such a great hub! Any cat lover will appreciate this. Thanks for including so many beautiful photos.
cardelean from Michigan on November 08, 2011:
Great pictures. We JUST got a kitten about a week ago for many of the reasons you mentioned. It is black and white and my kids are having a blast with him. They named him Charlie Raisin. Thanks for sharing such a cute hub.
arusho from University Place, Wa. on November 08, 2011:
cute cats! my cat doesn't like to be picked up though..
FloraBreenRobison on November 08, 2011:
I love that you "warn" us about the cute cat pictures. Some cats don't mind being picked up while others can't stand it. We had a cat for 16 years when I was growing up who hated being picked up unless she was sick. It was always a bad sign when she didn't struggle. I love this pictures. Amy does indeed have a variety of meows.
Riviera Rose from South of France on November 08, 2011:
