Naming Your Feline Friend

Here, kitty, kitty . . . What, does the cat not have a name yet?

In a world flooded with cats, your cat’s name needs to stand out so when you go calling your cat by name if or when he gets out, you won’t also be summoning that cat from around the corner, your neighbor’s cat, and your neighbor’s neighbor’s cat.

Avoid Ordinary Names

When trying to name your cat, steer clear of overused names such as Felix, Whiskers, Socks, and Tiger. Oh, and avoid names that sound like the names of your neighbor because it would just be odd to have an old lady with Alzheimer's named Bernadette clawing at your door (if you toss some sardines out the window, she’ll go away!)

Talk About Personality

Cats need interesting names, you see, because cats are very interesting creatures! If you’ve been a cat owner, then you’ve likely witnessed their intense mood swings, crazy antics, and their undying love for a water gun. Okay, not all cats are created equal and to each his own! Some cats are seriously funny though, so if your feline friend is a funny one, well, doesn’t he deserve a funny name?

One of the most important factors that should be considered when choosing a cat name is assessing the cat’s personality. Funny cat names are just not suitable for all cats; sweet cats should have cute names, lazy cats should have plain names, but silly cats need funny names! That makes sense, right? How is anyone going to name a fat, lazy, couch cat “Frisky”?

Choosing a Perfect Name

Hopefully you’ve found the name you need here so you can stop calling your cat by “kitty kitty,” unless, of course, you’re choosing to call it that name! If you are having a tough time coming up with a name, don’t just settle.

I’m sure your parents had somewhat of a tough time thinking of your name; imagine what the result would have been had they decided to just settle because they couldn’t make up their minds! That’s where names like BillyJoe and BobbieSue came about. Yeah, that could have been you.

More Things to Consider

So spare your cat of the pain and suffering that a horrible name can cause. If you need some help coming up with funny cat names, try thinking about these:

  • Mannerisms: Cats have very unique mannerisms. Watch how your cat acts around various stimuli and you might just find inspiration for the name!

  • Noises: Yes, all cats “meow” but they all have different voices. Some are high-pitched and squeaky, while others may be a little lower and perhaps a bit scratchy.

  • Activity level: Does your cat like to climb to the highest point possible that it can find? Or does it pretty much stay camped out on the couch or under the bed?

  • Appetite: You are what you eat!

  • Color: Okay, this may seem cat-racist, but you can find inspiration for names from their colors; proceed with caution!

  • Fur coat: Or no fur coat? That is the question. Some cats cannot be found under all of their fur, while other cats never grow any! Can you think of any names yet?

So while your cat is going bump in the night and you cannot sleep because you don’t yet have a name to call it by, take a sleeping pill and hope that it comes to you in your dreams.

Maybe you’ll find what you need when you wake up to see that antique vase shattered on the floor, your cup of water knocked over, or the entire roll of toilet paper unraveled. Cats are such funny little devils, aren’t they?

Beautiful names! I either name my cats after food (Coco, Ginger, etc.) or after warrior cats like Jayfeather (nickname Jay) and Hollyleaf (nicknamed Holly.) Haha...

Here's what NOT to name a cat: Avoid names of characters from favorite TV shows and films. Eventually, that cat will die and you won't be able to watch that show/film without getting emotional. When my Yoda dies, I don't know if I'll ever be able to watch another Star Wars movie.

Awesome hub! I really enjoyed it. I love your advice about avoiding ordinary names. I'm fairly sure cats could care less what their names are, so why not choose a unique one! Here's a few more funny names:

Cute name suggestions! I personally prefer old man/lady names for pets. Like Baxter, Charleston, Rufus, Olive, Myrtle, and Agatha. Not sure why. It's just cute!

Great hub. I like your name suggestions.

I do like those people who come up with pet names that are original. I think taking the time to come up with a name that really represents the personality of the pet is vital.

      Voted up!

This is a very good hub and I voted it up. I have a feral that comes around my house from who knows where and vanishes the same and I named him Merlin. He doesn't really like that name or is not used to it but he does like his other name that I call him...Pretty Boy. He has the blueist eyes that I have ever seen. I wish he would come to me, but it has been a year and he still has his 25 foot boundary.
