Black Dog Breeds

There’s just something about a black dog that is so beautiful. Perhaps it’s that deep, black, lustrous, gorgeous coat of fur that makes you just want to cuddle every single one you see!

It’s almost as if they are living teddy bears. Many breeds of black dogs are gentle enough to be confused with teddy bears and make terrific pets.

Many breeds of black dogs have a reputation for being gentle, loving, sweet, family dogs.

These breeds are known to make great family pets:

  • German Shepherd
  • Gordon Setter
  • Labrador
  • Newfoundland
  • Poodle
  • Portuguese Water Dog
  • Pug
  • Russian Terrier
  • Schnauzer
  • Scottish Terrier

This is not a complete list of good family dogs. Any breed can make an excellent family pet if it is provided a loving, nurturing atmosphere to thrive in.

Deciding on a Name

The list of black names goes on and on. If you don’t see one on this list that suits your fancy, or your dog, then try thinking of anything you possibly can that’s related to the color black. You’ll find yourself coming up with many different options, and eventually one that is perfect for your furry friend!

If you are just having a hard time deciding between a few names, try the following tips for letting your dog pick its own name.

  • Call out names: This method works pretty well if you have three or more different names in mind. Sit across a room and begin calling out names, pausing for 20-30 seconds between each name. When your dog comes running, that’s its name!

  • Family circle: Great for settling disputes among family members as to what to name the pup. Have everyone form a large circle around the dog (but not so close that it gets scared). When the game starts, everyone should begin at the same time to call the dog by the name they desire. Whoever the dog goes to gets to name the dog.

  • Index cards: Take a few index cards and write different names on them, placing them all around the room with a piece of food on each one. Whatever one your dog eats off of first shows the name the dog will get.

  • Pees on trees: This one requires a male dog who knows how to lift his leg already, and a backyard with a few trees. Write names on index cards and tack one card on each tree in the backyard. Whatever tree the dog pees on first shows the name that he chose!

However you choose to name your black dog, make it a fun process, since you will only have to do it once!

Hi Tutta. Our girl was from the Humane Society so she probably was not a true pure breed. She looked like a flat-coated retriever with beautiful feathers on her tail and legs. I love your dog's name, Savannah. My BFF named her black dog Dakota.

        Hi Peg!

Thanks for reading and responding! I love Gordon Setters, such pretty dogs. I've got an all black flat-coated retriever named Savannah; not very original now after coming up with all these black dog names. I'll just have to keep them in mind for our next puppy!

        All the best,

        Tutta

I had to laugh at your decision making process for choosing the dog's name. That was really funny. My dog's name was Buckwheat and she was a female Gordon Setter who lived to be sixteen.
