I love jugs and I enjoy educating people about this crossbreed.
What Are Jugs?
A jug is a cross between a Jack Russell and a pug, so it's not a purebred dog but a hybrid of the two breeds. They are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club and generally make wonderful family pets.
Being individuals, with a mix of both Jack Russell and pug characteristics, each jug will have its own unique personality. However, here are some traits from both sides that are common in jugs:
- You should expect some of the fearless Jack Russell qualities, with a need for lots of exercising and sometimes an obsession with digging.
- Some jugs, like Jack Russells, are very dominant and may suffer from "little dog syndrome" where they feel that they are dominant over all other dogs (and humans for that matter). It is wise to instill in them the knowledge that you are the leader of the pack from a very early age.
- Typical pug-like qualities you may notice in your jug are sensitivity and a tendency to become jealous of other dogs (and children) in the home.
An ideal combination of the two breeds will give you a jug who has a fearless and protective nature, yet is highly sociable and easy to train due to the high intelligence of both breeds.
Jugs, depending on their mix percentages, tend to have pug type faces that are flatter than those of normal Jack Russells, with pug-like ears and a short snout. They may have leaner Jack Russell type bodies and will usually carry a curly pug tail. Coloring varies (depending on the parents) but the most typical jugs are various shades of either caramel or black. They are very endearing to look at and their cuteness and charm always guarantees a good deal of attention when out and about.
Jugs usually grow to between 10 to 14 inches in height and can weigh anywhere between 10 to 18 pounds (depending on the ratio of crossbreeding and the size of the parents).
Jugs are generally very sturdy and healthy little dogs and will live between 14 and 20 years if fed a healthy diet and exercised daily.

Hi there! My son and I just adopted two beautiful boy jugs! They are brothers and so much fun! They are 16 weeks old now and we’ve had them since about 10-11 weeks. In a months time, I’ve potty trained them (which is always a work in progress. We live in an apartment and they do so great. If anyone has to go in the house, they both use a pee pad. But we take them out religiously several times a day), they know how to sit for a treat, and do very well in their kennel. They go into the kennel at night and during the day while we are at work and school. One of my babies is a barker, the other not so much! Each of them has a different personality but they really do compliment each other. I would say the only downfall (and its literally the only one I could think of) is they like to chew! Got one of my cabinets when I wasn’t looking

I had a Jug for 14 1/2 years who passed away in March of 2019. Do you have recommendations where I can find another Jug close to Mass.?
Cavan on August 20, 2019:
If you’re considering a jug - get one!
Mason is the best dog I’ve ever had. He’s coming up to 2 years now.
He’s playful, loves other dogs (socialized early as a pup) and is a great companion.
He’s a good apartment dog too. Doesn’t mind the small terrace as he’ll sleep most of the day but gets a run around the park every night.
His only flaw (and I can’t blame him) is the shedding of his coat. It is well worth it for the love, affection and joy this little guy gives out to everyone every single day.
He’s often complimented at the park that he is very handsome and a unique brindle color for his breed. 10/10 dog. ❤️

My little female Bella jug is now two years old, she follows me everywhere I go in the house. Even outdoor she always keep me in sight.
At 9 weeks old I started sleeping with Bella in our middle bedroom and been there ever since. If I go in the master bedroom which she is not allowed will come and get me and barks at my wife like it's her fault I'm not with her. Very smart and very friendly with any children she meets, seem to feel confident when around little ones.
Lots of energy which I enjoy to bring her to the dog park
Best little dog, I ever had, and follows my routine
Been looking for a second but really hard to find.

We have a 8 weeks old Jug name Hunter. He is amazing!!!! People stop us everywhere to take pictures of him. He is light golden with white and his face is darker tan. He is so smart and so conniving lol. I have never really had a puppy of my own and my hubby and I are head over heels for Baby Hunter. He is so daring and fearless and he doesn't like when big dogs approach him without permission, he becomes unfuriated and acts like if he is a pit bull lol. He has a very big wardrobe with many hats and rain/snow boots! Lmao Hey I'm a young mama so I love fashion.

We have a Jug and she Is adorable. She can be trained really easily and will only play if someone else is playing. She also is very, very lazy, most of the time she is starting out of the window with the sun in her face! It is true, she thinks she is better than anyone but when she meets them she becomes jealous and gets frightened!

My family adopted a jug from a rescue shelter 5 years ago and absolutely love her. We know she was abused when we got her but with love and attention she came around within months. She was 2 at the time and had been categorized incorrectly as a lab chihuahua mix. I discovered she was a jug and have had it confirmed by several vets. She is hyper one minute and asleep the next. She is amazing with my boys, cat and 2 other small dogs! (Once she knew who was boss!). To me she is the perfect dog! She is completely trained and sleeps in the bed burrowed under the covers with me! I would definitely recommend a jug for a family with children and other animals but purchase prices I've seen are crazy!! Rescue- Rescue - Rescue!!! Look for the characteristic of a jug but remembered they won't all look like the pictures. My Happy actually looks like a mini black lab that will never grow up! Do your research!

I have a two year old jug named Quincy and he is a wonderful loving boy!! I had two pugs before him and love the pug personality but wanted a mix...he's perfect. He has a silly little underbite which makes his teeth stick out of his mouth some of the time. He hated a kennel so we had to gate him in the laundry room while at work. He can jump so high that he would escape the gate every day and greet us at the door after work! Luckily he was easy to house break so he now has the run of the house. He does dig holes in the yard occasionally and barks very little which is a plus. He is scared to death of a hair dryer and when a person whistles?!?! Silly little fellow and wouldn't want him any other way!!

I have a 4 month old jug that I got at 8wks old. She is the most beautiful thing I've ever laid eyes on! I always get compliments on how well behaved she is. Right now she sits, stays, shakes paw, and plays fetch like a champ. She is crate trained and is very good about going potty outside too. Rarely she will 'jealousy pee', but she's been breaking this habit since I've started enforcing time-outs. I've never had any problems with her chewing on anything she shouldn't - except for maybe my blanket- and she knows to stick to her toys. The first few weeks she was nippy while playing, but it was easy to break this habit by immobilizing her (pin them on their backs gently) until she calmed down. Now we can play wrestle without an incident! My boyfriend works at a doggy daycare and has a German shepherd cross, so we often go to his house or the kennel to socialize. She is great with all sizes of dogs and is surprisingly submissive. It is almost impossible to get her to bark as well, she is extraordinarily quiet unless playing with other puppies. She's also very cuddly and is rarely anywhere but by my side when I'm home, which I don't mind one bit! As far as exercise is concerned, I can take her jogging or for a long walk no problem, but she also doesn't mind lounging around with me for a day doing nothing at all. She sleeps beautifully too, 8 hours a night. I honestly couldn't ask for more from my little Leeloo, and she's still so young and has so much to learn!

Use puppy training pads for toilet training or a crate but only use a crate if you are going to be with the puppy all the time but this is a brilliant way to toilet train. My jug puppy Milo is a good healthy dog but he loves to eat shoes and in at everything so you pretty much have to watch them all the time but they are really friendly happy dogs and love to play, good luck with yur puppy :)

I will not travel to meet people other than the three counties I am near. If you are interested, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is not a scam, I am not asking for a single dollar up front...just getting the word out that in three weeks I will have jugs available( most of them are black or black and white..a couple have a uniique shade of black with and undercoat of brown)

Jack, our 2yr old Jug, is just wonderful! He is very entertaining as well as being a good companion for my 80 yr old father. Jack never tires of playing fetch or sitting on someones lap. He is all black with one white foot. He knows his toys by name and when asked will bring you the ball, squrille, frizebe, etc. He will also put them back into his "toy box" on comand. He is crate trained and when told "it's time for night, night" will run right to it. Recently Jack has started to growl and nip at strangers who try to pet him. This is a new behavior. He never growls at anyone he knows, but I am concerned he may bite someone. Any recommendations?

Within the first weekend we brought her home she was completely potty trained. She loves other dogs, especially large dogs in the neighborhood and loves to go to the dog park. She did love to chew while teething and we found that giving her a bully stick satisfied her need to chew. I absolutely love my cute little jug and wouldn't replace her for anything.

My daughter and her boyfriend just got an 8 week old Jug named Karma. She is sweet, beautiful and loves to play. She is just starting to nibble and chew on people and things like chairs. They bought the bitter apple spray that is to keep cats and dogs away from certain furniture and wires, but get this She LIKES IT! She started licking it. So know they are trying the No with a tap on the nose and someone suggested spraying water in their face. She has been wonderful with peeing on the pee pads since she cannot go outside yet bc she has not gotten her first shots yet since her and two siblings have Kennel Cough and are being treated for 10 days. She will get her shots next Monday and then they will start with outside potty training. We "Grandpuppy" sat on Friday night and it was almost as nerve racking as if it were a real baby! We had to give her medicine and she was mad at me bc I was the one to make her take it. We have always had large dogs like German Shepards and our current dog is a Golden/Lab mix. But seeing Karma and how tiny she is and how cuddly, now I won't discriminate against the little dogs anymore. She is a great addition to our family!

Funny story: She loves to lick my boyfriends ears and face. She does a "fake out" she will walk by him, pretend to look at something, like she is not paying attention to him and then runs back and starts licking him. Its the funniest thing! no idea where she picked that one up :)

We have one male jug who will be 1 year in just a few days, his name is Riley. Hes very loveable and FULL of energy! Sometimes he nips, and we are having trouble with this, but its playful i think? However, still needs to stop. He also likes to jump on people. Any advice on those things would be great!
We love him so much that we went today and got him his own little jug friend. Dexter is 13 weeks old and reminds of exactly of Riley when he was that size with his energy level. However he wont go potty! Riley is more pug with a Jack personality and although we just met Dexter he seems to have more physical traits of a jack. And the same personality as Riley. They were great togethor. Riley is so happy to have a friend.

I've had my jug pup since last July. He was very difficult to house train. We have just got to where he won't mess in the house at night. Also we had to take him to the vet last October because of his eyes. He has cherry eye in both eyes. It looks weird but apparently it's normal for bug-eyed dogs or dogs with droopey eyes. The vet said it doesn't hurt or effect his vision. Unfortunatly he has to have surgery to get his eyes fixed and while we're there we will have him nuetured as well.
Other than his eye problems and the house training... he is a very loveable and playful pup. He is always so excited to see people though he is a great a watchdog. He never barks when it is either me or my boyfriend that is coming into the house but when it is anybody else he barks his little head off.
We don't have any kids yet but are expecting our first in August. I just hope my pup doesn't get jealous of the baby. :(

I have a jug who just turned 1...She is very loveable
and family friendly..She also has a lot of energy. You could literally take food from her mouth and she would allow you too. She has never bit anyone.

Hi my name's briani i am 11 years old and i live in South Jersey i used to be completely obsessed with dogs i would always watch animal planet and learn all i could but be parents would never get me a dog they said the dog would be to big of a responsibility and i continuley begged and tried to tell them they were wrong. In october finally we went to look at a dog from a family we knew and they luckliy were tried to give away a jug to a caring family with kids as soon as we saw Daisy (the puppy we were looking at) we instantly fell in love with her so we brought her home but little did i now taking care of a dog by yourseld at 11 years old is a HUGE responsibility one i wasn't ready for about a month after i got her i was ready to give hey up but my mom realized my frustration and started to help me out soon Daisy became a family dog and not only that but she has taught me responsibility and she has now been the best thing that has ever happened to me I love her with all my heart and you guys out there are very lucky to have a dog of anykind :)

I'll certainly spread the word and hopefully a good home will be found soon.

A jug was turned into ACCT in Philly today. Please spread the word! Fingers crossed someone adopts him, he needs a home!
Jasmine on November 21, 2010:
I live in the NY area and wanted to know if anyone knows of a Jug rescue or adoption place where I can adopt a Jug dog. I know I can get one at a pet store but I would rather try to save a life than buy one instead with so many dogs needing loving homes. Thanks.

To Kassidy25 - I would always recommend waiting 8 weeks before collecting your new additions to keep them as much time as possible with mum. Sending you fondest wishes to you and your new extended family x

We have a year old female jug named peanut. She is truly the best dog, she really cheered up my 11 year old last year when she was being picked on at school. My daughter has so much self confidence now just from the love my baby jug gives to my daughter. Peanut and my daughter are now finishing peanuts service dog training classes and are planning to visit terminal cancer patients. My daughter wants to share with others the love our peanut puppy gives everyday with others who need to have a happy day. We did notice she would love to have a puppy friend to play with: so for christmas peanut will be getting a 9 week old black male pug named pierre. thanks

We got our Jug about 9 weeks ago. She is 17 weeks old.
She is so cute and very playful. Her name is Daisy but we were thinking about calling her killer because she love to attack sheos and toes.
She is so loved by everyone in the family

Anita, I'm so pleased to hear your story about Percy. He sounds a wonderful little chap and your local shelter is clearly a wonderful place. Yours is truly a heartwarming story and has made my week x
Erik on October 24, 2010:
I was wondering if anyone knew of a good Jug breeder in Canada?
Anita McMunn on October 23, 2010:
We are senior citizens and my husband is blind and can get very depressed. Our daughter decided we needed a dog.She stoped at our local humane society and came home with a picture of Percy to show us. We agreeded to go meet him and fell in love with him. He has been with us about three weeks and has been a perfect little gentleman,he sits on my husbands lap and loves to play tug. My husband loves him. We didn't know what we had when we adopped him but found out he is a jug. We are thankfull our local shelter is a no kill shelter as he had been there for a while. We love him!!

We got our jug about a month ago and she is doing well. She loves our laps and laying behind you for some reason lol. As i am typing this she is laying on my lap sleeping. She doesn't bite a lot but occasionaly can get a little chewy. She does seem to find anything she can small. She loves to play with my other dog, a boxer beagle mix, they do get alittle wild though, especially while we eat dinner, which can get annoying. The only thing that is weird about her is that she is scared of the dark. Any advice on how to fix that?

I'm looking at getting a Jug, he is apparently 1 year old. Any suggestions? Should I know anything first?
Do they have any common health issues?
Chris on August 10, 2010:
We just got a Jug 2 1/2 weeks ago. She is now 3 months old. Her name is Macie, and she is just adorable. She has a lot of energy and the last few days she has been very stubborn with me. I take her out on a walk in the morning and evening. But the last couple of days she didn't want to walk. Just sat her butt down and did not move. She looks like a Pug but has an attitude like the JRT. She sits for her treats and toys, plays fetch - even brings it back to me. Shen still needs to learn her Name, the meaning of "NO" - she gets mad at me when I tell her no and she starts to bark & bite at me. Is this normal? How do I get her to stop? I tried walking away when she is not behaving (biting, chewing on me) - does not seem to work. I put her in the kitchen for a 'time out' - does not work, I don't know what to do. I don't want to get physical with her when she is in that mood, but what else can I do? I try to destract her with a toy when she uses my fingers/hands, but it doesn't always work. Is it to early for obidience school?

Hi I have Jug, she is 9 months old and called Willow. She is the boss of our house, i have another dog called O'son who is an 8 stone cross breed ( Douge de bordeaux cross Rottweiler) and she rules him! They get on so well, they are both loveable socialable pets. Willow is the fastest dog in the neighbourhood, and wants to be friends with eveybody. Wouldn't and change my little and large pair for anything. :-)

I would love to get a JUG puppy but I can't find them anywhere where i live! I have looked on the internet but so far i haven't had much luck with that either. The one website i was looking at turned out to be scammers so now i am very leary about buying a puppy online. Does anyone know of a website that is not a scam that i can buy a jug puppy from??? Or any breeders ( i live in western ny)
