Dog Names - Hundreds of Suggestions by Color, Breed, Size, and Group

Updated on August 25, 2015

Choosing a Name for Your Dog or Puppy

So . . . you need some ideas for dog names or puppy names, huh? Naming a new furkid can be pretty challenging, but it’s fun, too. But how do you go about choosing a name for a dog? I’d venture to guess that there are millions of great unique dog names across the planet, along with lots of popular choices, in every language.

There are several ways to narrow down your choices to a handful or two.

  • Breed. If your pooch is a purebred, you might want to choose a moniker that’s breed specific. Instead of dog breeds, you could think about coat color, texture, or pattern. For example, you might want to name a dog with a brindle coat "Tiger,” or you might like the name “Woolie” for a pet with a long, thick coat.
  • Personality. This can be used even with puppy names, as a six- or eight-week-old pup has already begun to develop its own unique personality.
  • Country of Origin. You might also want to think about the dog breed's country of origin when choosing dog names, like a Mexican name for a Chihuahua or a Russian name for a Borzoi.
  • Group Association. Another way to choose a name for a dog is to associate it with the group to which the breed belongs. Is it a member of the herding group, a hunting dog, or a pampered lap dog?
  • Size. Dog size can influence the name you select, too. Big, small, medium, giant—all of these categories have different connotations that can help you select or think of some names.

Have fun perusing the hundreds of dog names below! There are name lists for all the following categories.

Male Dog Names

Dog names for males can run the gamut, from simple to regal to tough-sounding. Let the name fit the dog.

An independent, take-charge type might be named “Captain,” while a great companion animal might be named “Buddy.” For a protective guard dog, you might prefer something more menacing, like “Cerberus.” If the dog is always causing problems, you might want to name him something like “Demon” or “Mischief.”

Female Dog Names

Most of the following female dog names have a feminine sound, but some are just fun. Girl dog names can take on a personality all their own, whether it’s feminine, flirty, cute, or elegant.

Choose carefully, and make sure the name is a good fit. Say it out loud several times to see how it feels. If you select a longer name, you’ll probably want to have some idea about how to shorten it for everyday use.

German Shepherd Names

Most of these German Shepherd names are based on monikers of German or Teutonic origin, so they’d be appropriate for any dog breeds that were developed in that nation.

Golden Retriever Names

I used to breed golden retrievers, and I love the breed. Most of the Golden Retriever names I’ve suggested here are based on coat color. The goldie’s coat can range from a buff color to a rich gold to a reddish-gold.

I also included the name “Tweed” because the breed was developed in Scotland by Baron Tweedmouth. The following dog names would be suitable for just about any dog that had a similarly colored coat.

Names for Herding Dogs

Herding dogs are those breeds that round up, single out, and move herds of animals, according to their masters’ signals and commands.

These are usually super intelligent dogs, and the dog breeds represent a broad range of colors and color patterns. Since that’s the case here, most of these suggested names have more to do with the dogs’ line of work.

Black and white dog names are fun. I’ve always liked that sharp contrast between light and dark. We actually have a black and white boy – a harlequin Great Dane.

No, we didn’t choose one of the following names for black and white dogs. Instead, we named him according to his enormous size and his breed. Consider these black and white dog names for border collies, Dalmatians, Landseers, mantle and harlequin Great Danes, and other bi-colored pooches.

Funny Dog Names

Now for the really fun part – funny dog names! You can go in practically any direction with this. One of my ancestors served under General Robert E. Lee in the Civil War, and he hated the general.

After the war was over, my relative got a really ugly bulldog and named him after Lee. Of course, funny dog names are often tongue-in-cheek titles, and some give people pause when they hear the names.

Dog Names for Terriers

Terriers have a reputation for being fearless, feisty, and full of energy. Most terriers were bred to hunt and kill vermin, including mice, rats, rabbits, badgers, foxes, and other critters that use underground burrows. The name “terrier” actually comes from the Latin word for earth, by the way.

In my opinion, big dog names should usually imply size and power. That is, of course, unless you want to be sarcastic and give such a dog a name like “Tiny.” That can be fun!

Wow, you put a lot of work into this! And I love your dog pictures.

The Humane Society had names for my dogs, so I kept the names. But naming dogs is a fun thing.

My favorite dog name is Jojo. We had an American Husky when my sister and I were very small. Very protective of us and loyal.

My last pet was a Blue Dane in the 90's to 2002. I used the name Jojo for him since it seemed the perfect fit. First time I called it out to him as a pup, he immediately ran to me, so it stuck.

I know where to go the next time I need ideas for naming a pet! This would be a great list to pass on to an animal shelter.

So many names! What a marathon! Our dog is called Molly. Our then five year old son called all our animals after children in his nursery - the kittens were Saffron and Anastasia, the dog Molly, the goats Alice and Eva - and so on! (I notice you include Molly in your list). I live in France now and you have to call pedigree dogs a name beginning with a letter of the alphabet according to the year they were born. (Only the French could try to control the name you call your pet). Molly was born in the year of the 'U', so officially she's called Udine. Molly Udine - what do you think?

In your big dog names list you have Goliath...that's funny because my Miniature Pinscher is named Goliath - his name always gets a chuckle out of people. But, it fits him because he thinks that he is a huge dog.

Our French Brittany isn't on the list either. His name is Beau. We got him as rescue dog and that was his name when we got him.

Our larger dog is LC, pronounced Elsie. She is our son's dog. The lady that had her named her LC for little cow, because she said she looked more like a calf when she was born. She is a cow herding dog, so that explains it a bit.

This hub is a very great one with a titanic amount of work. It looks more like a whole book about dogs and dog names. Though, I am puzzled on names for Russian brids since I found just few that Russians would use to name a dog. Anyway, it is a best hub I had seen so far. Thanks for you hard work and the fun it delivered to many people.

Out of the many names here (congats! the list is long!), I am a firm believer in naming the dogs according to character. I have 2 males, one a Pit and the other a Pit/Mastiff mix; Pit is named Grumpy and the other Smooch. I named my children after seeing their faces for the first time too - they just looked the part.

Believe or not, with all the dog names you listed, I have one name you did not list. I have owned two Boxers. My first Boxer was named "Rocky." You did list Rocky, so I was not so original naming my first Boxer. But my current Boxer is named "Sugar Ray." I did not see Sugar Ray on your list, so I guess I was a little more original naming my current Boxer. I named my Boxer Sugar Ray after two professional boxers who carried the same moniker: Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson.

I just thought I would pass along the name.

      Great list you made!

Here are some names I named mine over the years 1) cochise 2) Nakia 3) shakiah 4)Zoey , have adopted a new part chihuahua / terrier who is white with light brown spots and I cannot for the life of me think of a name for him, he's a lover not a fighter, scared of cats I keep watching his personality, but nothing comes up...he was quickly adopted before me by someone with heart when they saw him wandering in the roadway, found the owners and they said they didn't want him they lived in a rv, so now the adoptive parents couldn't keep him cuz their other dog was mean to him, so they temporarily named him Sammy, which I can't stand, so anybody have any names for this sweet dog who is just trying to find a stable home life ??
