iTops is my dog's name, and I'm here to share 100+ more fun and creative pet name ideas with you!
Funny and Creative Names for Animals
Naming pets is fun! When we got a new pet, my sister and I used to have a contest to see who could come up with the funniest, cutest pet name. And, of course, being older, I almost always won.
The name you give your pet reflects your personality. You can name your new pet Supernova to show your nerdy side or Henge to show your interest in earthworks. Our dog’s name was supposed to be Tops (from our favorite snack), but we decided to place an ‘i’ in front to make it a bit different: iTops.
Whatever name you give your pet, give a name that you will love to say, even after 100 years.
Be creative! Here are some ideas:
Powerful Pet Names
You can name your pets after gods and goddesses to give them magical powers!
- Athena – the Greek goddess of wisdom and inspiration
- Hera – the Greek goddess of marriage
- Diana – the Roman goddess of the moon and animals
- Venus – the Roman goddess of love and beauty
- Fides – the Roman goddess of trust
- Zeus – the king of the gods in Greek mythology
- Apollo – the Greek god of the sun
- Morpheus – the Greek god of dreams
- Hercules – the Roman god of strength
- Janus – the Roman god of beginnings
Check out godly names from a list of Greek gods and goddesses at Wikipedia.
Fairy Tale Creature Pet Names
Fairy tales are a source for many good pet names. They remind you of the land of dreams.
- Unicorn – a horse with a beautiful horn
- Caladrius – a bird capable of healing maladies
- Griffin – a winged creature with a lion’s head
- Cyclops – the one-eyed giant
- Phoenix – a firebird
- Arion – an immortal horse
- Mermaid – an enchanting half-woman, half-fish creature
- Naga – the protector of nature
- Shen – a Chinese dragon
- Naiad – a nymph associated with fountains and streams
You can name your pet after your favorite food as well. We named ours after our favorite snack. Maybe your pet likes to eat something other than pet food. You can name him after that.
Maybe you want to go for an international food? Here are some:
- Schnitzel – a German dish consisting of a strip of meat that is battered and fried
- Wasabi – a Japanese spice
- Kringle – a type of pretzel that originated in Scandinavia
- Pecorino – an Italian cheese
- Sbiten – a Russian drink

Pet Names Based on Natural Phenomena
There are occurrences in nature that are suitable as pet names. Some of them were even used in movies, like Orion (the cat in Men in Black) and Seabreeze (the dog in Family Guy).

Name Your Pet After Another Animal
This may sound funny, but you can also name your pet after other animals. Because our pets are usually small, you can name them after the huge ones like lions or tigers. You can even name your pet after dinosaurs! T. Rex is a famous dinosaur name.

We have always tried to be creative. Phydo (husband always wanted a cat named Fido and a dog named Kitty), Uniden, Cobra (we were big cb fans), king (cause my husband said I made food fit for a king), Velcro (his claws would catch on carpeting) Shadrach (rescued from a fire), Gumby (she hung loosely when held like the clay cartoon figure) but our favorites are using other languages Opu (Hawaiian for belly, stomach), Da Kine (also Hawaiian), Leche ( Spanish for milk), Kiik (Maya for sister), Makana (Hawaiian for gift for an unclaimed parrot rescued from our dogs mouth). And my all time favorite Pregunta le (Spanish for ask her/him - loved telling my Hispanic friends, they inevitably leaned over to ask her, "what's your name, kitty?"?

Thanks Cloverleaf! Yes, Morpheus is a very nice name. Before looking Morpheus up, I thought he has something to do with wisdom (because of Matrix, the movie). Now, I know he's the God of dreams. :)

Hi Om! Coffee's a very nice name for a poodle. It's good that he's staying with your mom. I bet she's treating him like a baby. Thanks for dropping by! :)
Om Paramapoonya on October 22, 2011:
Cute suggestions. I named my Poodle "Coffee" because of his dark brown fur. He lives with my mom now. My apartment doesn't allow pets. He seems happier with my mom, though. She really spoils him! LOL
