Wheat Free Birthday Cake for Dogs

Susan's passions are writing and creating new dishes for her family and friends to enjoy.

Wheat-Free Healthy Birthday Cake For Dogs

Finding out a few years ago that both my dogs had a sensitivity to wheat, I started making them homemade dog biscuits, and birthday cakes. Yes birthday cakes— after all, they're considered family members too. I'm the first one to admit that they are spoiled just a little bit, but I bet your dogs are, too.

All of the ingredients that I put into dog cakes are safe for dogs to eat. I make sure to research everything before adding it.

Included along with this cake recipe, you will find foods that my two dogs enjoy eating.

Dog-Friendly Ingredients

  • Carob is part of the legume family and is often used as a substitute for chocolate. The taste is quite similar to chocolate, and it's safe for dogs to eat.
  • Peanut butter is safe for dogs to eat unless they have an allergy to it. Creamy is the safest, as there is a chance that a dog may choke on the bits of peanuts that are in the chunky peanut butter.
  • Olive oil is a healthy oil for dogs.

  4. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the rice flour with the baking powder, making sure to mix well.
  5. Stir in the bananas and olive oil.
  6. In a small bowl whisk the eggs.
  7. Add the eggs and peanut butter to the batter and beat with an electric mixer on high until well-blended.
  8. Add the carob chips, mixing in with a spoon or spatula.
  9. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
  10. Bake for approximately 25 minutes or until you can insert a toothpick into the center of the cake, and have it come out clean.
  11. Remove from the oven and set the cake on a cooling rack for 10 minutes before removing the cake out of the cake pan.
  12. Remove the cake from the cake pan and let the cake continue to cool completely on a cooling rack before frosting or decorating.

Baking for Dogs

The birthday girl: Maggie in her new bandanna

The birthday girl: Maggie in her new bandanna

August 22nd is Maggie's birthday and she is now 7 years old.

Maggie is a Newfoundland dog.

She doesn't know that I'm baking her a cake yet, so please don't let the cat out of the bag. She'll be sharing her cake with her brother Bruce. Maggie loves presents, and every year for her birthday and Christmas, she gets a new toy to open.

In the picture here she is with her grandmother, who brought her a new bandanna to wear. Maggie loves to dress up in t-shirts, sunglasses, and some days she will even wear a ball cap!

@Brite-Ideas: So many people are finding that the commercial dog foods are not the best choice for their dogs and do have to put them on special diets. I have mine on a wheat and grain free diet. It really does make a world of difference.

SimonJay on January 10, 2014:

This is very cute and thoughtful i always wanted to make my dogs a cake for their birthday but obviously the sort of cakes we eat are a lot more harmful for our little pets, so i am very happy to run across your lens.

@Ruthi: I'll see if I can come up with a healthy pumpkin pie recipe just for Tidbit :)

Ruthi on December 01, 2013:

Tidbit is a chow/Australian shepherd mix, from what most vets have told me. Tidbit prefers pie to cake... Seriously, this girl loves pumpkin pie!
