Bulldogs are a wonderful breed, but they were originally bred for aggression purposes and used to control livestock.
They were also used for a horrible sport called “bull-baiting,” which was thankfully banned in 1835, where a bull was on a tether and the bulldog would latch onto the nose of the bull until it was able to bring it down to the ground or got killed by the bull—this is possibly where the name “bulldog” came from.
These days, bulldogs make great family pets like any other breed of dog. Characterized by their short face, broad shoulders and sturdy stance, these dogs are quite a beautiful, distinctive breed that deserve names as cool and unique as they are.
Naming a bulldog can be a difficult task, so in order to make it less difficult, here is a list of awesome bulldog names to get you started in the naming process.
Male Names for Your Bulldog
Bulldogs are very tough and have a rather rugged, strong appearance. Give your male bulldog a name that complements these features while being descriptive of his personality and behaviors.
Female Names for Your Bulldog
Don’t be fooled by a female bulldog’s tough outward appearance because somewhere in there is a sweet, little, loving girl. Consider her personality and don’t be afraid to give her a softer name than you would a male.
Funny Dog Names
A little humor in a name can be a good thing, but be careful what you choose and really take it seriously—the novelty can eventually wear off.
Meaty Bully Names
Many bulldogs have a “meaty” appearance about them due to their wide shoulders and muscle mass. Though these names may seem silly, they describe their outward appearance pretty well (well, most of them).
Let Your Pooch Pick
Now that you’ve read through the list of awesome bulldog names, hopefully, you have found a good match for your bulldog.
Just in case you are still having trouble deciding, the following tips have been put together to help in the naming process.
The best part is, they involve your bulldog in the process of choosing!
- Call out names: If you have a few different names in mind but just cannot decide, sit in a different room than the dog and begin to call out your potential bulldog names, giving 20-second pauses in between each one. If your bulldog comes running to you, it has chosen its name!
- Family circle: If a few family members are getting into it over names, a fair way to solve this is to have everyone go into the room with the dog and form a circle around the dog, but not too close. Everyone should begin calling the dog by the name they want to give it and if the dog goes to one person, it takes on that name.
- Index cards: Write the potential bulldog names on index cards and place them around the room with a piece of food on each one. Let the dog in and it will pick the name by eating off of one of the cards. The first card it eats off of is the name it chooses!
- Pees on trees: This sounds silly (and it is!) and only works for male dogs who know how to lift a leg to go potty. Put a name on each tree in your backyard and let your bulldog out to go potty, whichever tree he marks first is the name he takes on! Funny and easy!
You see, there are many ways to decide on a name for your bulldog, and it doesn’t have to necessarily rest in your hands. However, you choose to go about picking out a name, make it fun because you are creating some good memories with your bulldog already!

I love this post! I have an English Bulldog named Bane. He's only a year old, so I think I could get away with calling him beef cake! He definitely resembles one!
