Over 180 Golden Retriever Names for Your Beloved Pup
My name is Tatiana, but my friends and family call me Tutta. I love writing articles that bring a little creativity to everyday life.
Why We Love Goldens
When you think of friendly dog breeds that make the perfect family dog, chances are the golden retriever crossed your mind. That’s because the golden retriever truly is a wonderful, friendly, and good-natured family dog.
Originally bred in England to “retrieve” hunted game, it’s no wonder why this breed often enjoys playing fetch! With their beautiful, soft, golden fur and gentle personality, this dog is ready to return all the love given to it, tenfold!
Golden Retriever Name Ideas
If you are reading this article, then it is likely that you now have one as a member of your family, or will soon; therefore, it is necessary to research golden retriever names.
The name should make sense with your dog’s personality, unlike those who have named their timid chihuahua “Jaws.”
Though it’s funny to give a dog an oxymoronic name, keep in mind that you will be saying this name for many years to come, and the humor factor eventually wears off (especially during those days of potty training when they don’t quite make it outside).
There's nothing quite like a great big, huggable golden retriever! My family's golden boy was named Buck, but any of these names will fit these friendly fellas!

Let Your Golden Retriever Help
Dogs can pick a name, too! If you are having trouble deciding on a name, get your dog involved; after all, it is his/her name so it is only fair!
Also, get the whole family involved because the names that will come up might surprise you.
Fun ways to involve everyone in the name picking process:
- Index cards: Have everyone pick a few names that they like and write them on index cards. Place each card on the floor with a piece of dog food on each one. Let your golden retriever into the room and watch as he sniffs out each card, and pay attention to which piece of food he eats first because this is the name he has “chosen.”
- Call out names: If you are the sole companion to the new golden retriever, try calling out a few different names spaced out by a few seconds and see if one catches your golden’s attention. If s/he happens to come to one of the names, s/he has “chosen” that name!
- Family circle: Perhaps there is a disagreement on names between a few members of the family. Such a disagreement is easily solved, here’s how: form a circle around the dog, but a large circle so he doesn’t get scared. Everyone should start calling him or her by the name they think s/he should have. S/he chooses the name of the person s/he goes to first!
- Pees on trees: I had to include this one because it’s pretty funny but only works for male dogs who have already learned to lift a leg. If you have a bunch of trees in your backyard, pin the potential golden retriever names to each tree and let him out to go potty. Watch him as he chooses his name; the first tree he marks is the name he picks!
Deciding on the Perfect Name for Your Pup
Whether you choose the name of your new golden retriever, or let the dog choose, make it a fun time because much like puppyhood, this day is going to be over with before you know it!
Once you have a name picked out, s/he will need to get used to the new name. Try giving the pup a treat each time s/he responds to the new name, and s/he will catch on pretty quickly!
Oh, and give lots and lots of love and cuddles. It can be a waggin’ good time for everyone involved!
