Good German Shepherd Name Ideas

Updated on February 19, 2016
German Shepherds are protective, nobel, brave, and playful. Choose a name that suits your dog's unique personality!
German Shepherds are protective, nobel, brave, and playful. Choose a name that suits your dog's unique personality! | Source

German Shepherds have several characteristics that can make coming up with a good name for them a bit time-consuming for some. A few of those tendencies include toughness, a protective nature, cunning, playfulness, and a tendency to be both ferocious and loving. If you are trying to find the perfect name, then this list should give you a good place to start. Use the name or let it spark your imagination.

It's very important to name your German Shepherd puppy as early as possible so it can begin to learn when to pay attention to you. In fact, the sooner you can come up with a name, the easier it will be to train your dog later on.

Although the dog probably won't care what it's name is, as an owner it is your responsibility to pick out a good one as a sign of respect and love for your new pet.

Before you continue on, I would like to congratulate you on your new pet! It is my hope that it will make your life even better than it is right now. Enjoy!

Facts That You May Not Know About German Shepherds

  1. A very good all-weather dog due to their dense coat.
  2. In the 1920s, Dutch breeders tried to introduce wolves into the bloodline, but the resulting species could not be domesticated.
  3. The German Shepherd has a bite second only to the Rottweiler, with 238 pounds of biting pressure.
  4. Part of the reason German Shepherds are used by so many police forces is that the dogs have the discipline to stop an attack when instructed.
  5. These dogs were bred specifically for intelligence. They are in fact the third most intelligent breed behind Poodles and Border Collies.
  6. Other names for this breed include the Alsatian, Deutscher Schaferhund, GSD, and Berger Allemand.
  7. German Shepherds whose coats are pale in color or white are often frowned upon and undesirable. The most favored color is, of course, black and tan.
  8. Initially developed to herd sheep and help guard them against predators.

Bonnie & Clyde are my two GSDs' names. From the same litter and almost 11 years old. Funny, I am now returning to Scotland and with the change in animal quarantine laws, it's easy for them to come too!!

    • SHARON 2 years ago

My first GS we got from a rescue & his name was Romell. I didn't quiet like that name so he then became Roman. #2 was named Jessi & was the smartest one we have ever had. My husband passes out from PTSD & Jessi would not ANYONE around him while he was out except me. #3 I think was Casey & he is a brute but a big goof ball & fun loving. #4 was Ally, she is very smart & always minds us & a very good mommy. #5 is Max, he is a big boy & wants to have fun & attention. He likes to next door & get all neighbors dogs stirred up, all in fun of course. #6 is Sasha, she is black & red & likes to bully her brother Max. #7 is Rocky, he is the sweetest boy & will do anything you tell him to do (most of the time) & he is only 1 yr old. EVERYONE OF THEM ARE MY BABIES. LOVE THEM ALL. THE BEST DOG ANYONE COULD HAVE.

My best friend, my GSD, just passed away. His Name was RIGGS (Lethal Weapon). We will soon begin looking for a new GSD and I am looking for another great name. We will get another Male, I want short name easy to command and call. They are so smart and can learn so much it is amazing. But they wanna work, you must keep them busy and make them work. I'm thinking of names like Jazz, Chaos, or Timber. Maybe something tool or lumber related since I am a Contractor and Builder. Good Luck all, congrats on choosing a GSD.

I have a new pup and I have too many names that I want to call her so I am trying to narrow it down. One is Kitty, but I think it will be Sleeping Beauty for my 14 year old Golden/Aussie Shepherd is named Sweatie. So it's Sweatie and Beauty but the first name I called her is Talu. Another name is Terra for she is a little Terror sometimes to my cat. Bullet is a good name for a male police dog or hunting dog. Right now she is Baby or Puppy.

Of course you can name your German shepherd puppy or dog anything you like. Some German shepherds are named after a trait that they show at a young age. For example if they are very smart and learn really fast you might call him Einstein after Albert Einstein the famous mathematician who was known for being extremely smart. That might work for a male German shepherd names but for a female you might be searching for a more feminine name such as Precious who may define who the puppy is and what she is to you. There are literally thousands and thousands of German shepherd dog names.

We got our mischievous GSD from a shelter when he was 3 months old. Somehow we knew Loki would be a fitting name. In the 3 years we have had him, he has learned to open fully zipped backpacks, doors and trashcans! He is also an expert at acquiring anything and everything off the counters and tables when we aren't looking. Regardless of his naughty ways, he is the best dog in the world! We are also adopting an 18 mo. female GSD tomorrow!

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Our GSD male is officially named "weapon of mass distruction" in German. We call him "Waffen" (weapon) for short. Sometimes it translates to waffles :) We are a military family so everything is named with some sort of military context. We are about to add a female puppy to our family and are trying to come up with a good name for her.

Kaiser is a good name for a GSD as it imeans "Emperor" in German

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Do they clactually shed that bad?

    • anonymous 3 years ago

@anonymous: That reminds me of Destiny, a black GSD that I had since I was seven and she was two. She was my best friend and would have protected me from anything. It broke my heart when she died one month after my mom did, three years ago. Destiny was 16.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

I have two young daughters so our GSD that we "rescued" was named Artemis. Known mainly as goddess of the hunt she was also the protector of young women.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

@anonymous: Read your post and my heart goes out to you. We took in a German Sheoherds puppy that was a stray. He was the best dog we had ever owned. He had hemalytic anemia and died e days after Christmas. I too think he had cancer but not for sure. I agree on how very dear they are to your heart.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Adpoted my GSD from local humane soceity 10 years ago and named her Madison .We always were together and she liked her walks ,and then her rides in the truck and later in life as she became ill in her later years, and would not eat anything I learned she had cancer.I lost the dearest and most loved companion in my life the day we euthanized her.

    • aquarian_insight 4 years ago

We called our first GSD Jack - but every single GSD my dad had owned when he was growing up was called Jack. Strangely enough, the name really suited him although some people called him Jack the Ripper. Our latest GSD is called Masti, which means mischievous in hindi, and that name came up because he was such a naughty little thing when we got him. No matter what you call them , German Shepherds are the best, the most loyal and the most beautiful.

    • AnimalHouse 4 years ago

I like it that aside from suggesting names for our dogs, you also included German Shepherd facts.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

we had a GSD and her name was Lily ...now every time my kids see a GSD they say there is a Lily dog mommy. We are looking to add another female GSD to our family soon and are looking for a good girlie yet tough name for her.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

We got a GSD pup, and our family was arguing about his name on the car trip, then finally my dad suggested the GPS' name. My mom liked it, my two lil brothers could pronounce it, and I eventually warmed up to it.

And so he got named Garmin, our Lil Navigator.

i had a GSD named john Jenkins Jinglehiemer (like the song), and we just called him J.J. also, i think a good name for a German Shepherd would be Thor, the viking god of thunder, or Loki, Thor's slightly megalomaniac evil conjurer little bro... :)
