These are great names for hunting dogs, shade-tree dogs, and any other dog that just likes to hang around.

There are several other sites on the internet with redneck names for dogs. Unfortunately, they all give bad choices. A redneck name, just like any other you give your dog, needs to be short enough for the dog to respond to and long enough to differentiate from his commands.

Don´t name your dog a short word—something that sounds like sit, down, or stay, and don´t name him some four or five-syllable word that even you can´t keep straight.

Here are a bunch of great redneck and country music names you can name your new pup. Do him proud.

These redneck names for boys are one syllable and I actually prefer to use two when training. If you like one though, your dog will probably be happy to answer:

  • Bo: This may have been a White House dog, but no matter your political leanings, it still makes a great name.
  • Blue: What old blue tick hound wouldn’t be proud to run around with a name like this?
  • Buck
  • Dodge: Only the pickup really counts. All of those cars the company makes are just to keep the government distracted.
  • Duke: From the movies, as long as it doesn’t have Daisy tacked onto it.
  • Ford: If you´re a fan, this is a good name.
  • Jed: No one remembers the Biblical name, but almost everyone knows the character from the Beverly Hillbillies.
  • Ram: As in the pickup we all love, of course.

Good Redneck Names for Male Puppies

  • Barney: Almost everyone will remember Barney Fife.
  • Bubba: This one might be overused, but it is still a good choice.
  • Cletus: Everybody’s favorite. It almost sounds Roman, yet it is Simpsonian at the same time.
  • Clifford
  • Gator
  • Harley: The motorcycle, definitely an American symbol.
  • Larry: The redneck cable guy has made this one popular.
  • Otis
  • Pickup
  • Piston
  • Scooter: The origin of this name should be obvious.
  • Skeeter
  • Tater

Good Redneck Names for Female Puppies

  • Bertha
  • Boots
  • Brandy
  • Cherry: Another good name for a Red nose pit bull or Redbone coonhound.
  • Daisy: A type of flower.
  • Dixie
  • Holly
  • Honey
  • Lulu
  • Misty: A nice name, and not necessarily redneck!
  • Molly: Not just Redneck, just popular.
  • Nina: The ninth. Great name for a puppy from a big litter.
  • Princess
  • Sadie
Well, this kind of wild turkey is okay.

Famous country music singers also have some great names. Some of them are classic, some of them are modern, but all of them are good choices.

For the boys:

  • Conway
  • Country: This can actually work for a boy or a girl. A few times in the dog´s life you can count on someone asking “Is your dog´s name Country?”, to which you reply, of course, “If that ain't Country you can kiss my ***.”
  • Corey
  • Farron
  • Ferlin
  • Hank
  • Kenny
  • Lynyrd
  • Rascall
  • Rodney
  • Waylon: This is not a popular name and even people who aren´t fans of Country will know who it is.
  • Yoakum

And country music names for the girls:

  • Brenda
  • Carrie
  • Connie
  • Donna
  • Gretchen: This probably belongs in Dog Names from Germany.
  • JoDee
  • Kitty
  • Mindy
  • Patsy: One of my all-time favorites.
  • Taylor: This is one of the current country stars, but I am still more likely to go with Patsy Cline.
  • Trisha

Order a Tag for Your Dog

Once you have decided on a name, the most important thing you can do for your dog is order a tag with his name, your name, and your cell phone number. It may end up saving his life.

redneck-dog-names

If your dog is a hound and in need of a redneck name, do not be embarrassed about it. I read an essay recently stating that rednecks were one of the last ethnic groups that you could still tell jokes about. Maybe no one is embarrassed about picking these names!

I realize there are a lot more male names on here, so if you have any suggestions for other great redneck names, especially female names-which we really need more of, be sure to leave a comment!

  • Best Dog Names From Brazil
Does your new puppy lie around the house most of the day? Does she seem more interested in her pedicure than her new toy? If your dog jumps up into the hammock every chance she gets, maybe she should have a Brazilian name.
  • Tough and Badass Dog Names -- Outlaws and Gangstas
Some dogs are outlaws—some just jump on their bikes and pretend to be. One of these names will be the perfect accessory to make your dog tough. Or at least sound tough!

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on February 19, 2013:

That pickup law sounds like it is as well respected as 99.968% of the laws we have on the books in Brazil. Have you ever seen a family of four on a small motorcycle? (No, I do not mean using a sidecar.) It happens here. How about a father, new mother, and newborn child on a motorcycle? It happens here, and since the guy usually has only one helmet he uses it. How about kids riding in the trunk of a car? I see it every weekend.

Some laws just don't matter much.

Bob Bamberg on February 19, 2013:

Ah, but we do see dogs tied in the back of pickups in the northeast. In the late 90s the state legislature enacted a law requiring that dogs be tethered in the backs of trucks. I think around .032% of pet owners are aware of the law. I've used my newspaper column every couple of years to remind folks, and have written a hub about it. But, we still see dogs in the back of trucks.

You've got a great handle on the sports names to avoid. You could also go into college sports. Around here, Eagle would be the name that would get your dog abused. The BC Eagles went something like 2-10 this past season.

Or how about sports figures. You wouldn't want to name your dog A-Rod or Rocket.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on February 19, 2013:

Sorry I didn't want to use any of those old redneck jokes! The photo of the dog tied into the back of the truck says it all, don't you think? I bet you don't see that often in the northeast.

Fenway sounds good, kind of ageless. If you were dumb enough to name a dog Laker he´d be praised some years, whipped others, and tied up with a rope and thrown over a utility pole on his "good" years.

Be better than Viking. A dog cursed with that name would be kicked every year.

Bob Bamberg on February 19, 2013:

When I saw the email announcing this hub I couldn't get to it quick enough. I figured it would be the first coming of DrJefffoxworthy1961 but you actually treated the subject with great dignity. None of the names evoke images one wouldn't want to evoke (with the possible exception of Pickup), in my opinion.

When you do one on sports names, may I suggest Fenway for starters? I was in a pet supply store on Sunday and a guy came in with a beagle named Fenway. It was a big hit with the other customers (undoubtedly citizens of Red Sox Nation) within earshot. Fun hub...voted up, useful and interesting.
