75 Classic Cow Names

My name is Tatiana, but my family & friends call me Tutta. I love spending time with them and hope my writing brings more people together!

Bovines fall into two categories: beef or dairy. Of course, that’s not all that they are. Many cows and bulls become members of the family and deserve a good name! Cows and bulls have some of the biggest personalities on the farm, but cows in particular have are loaded with character. Coming up with the right name for your cow will be a fun task once you've had some ideas.

Naming Cattle

When coming up with great names for cows, take a good look at the breed, attitude (yes, cows have attitude!), and purpose that the animal serves on your farm.

  • Angus: Who doesn’t enjoy a good Angus burger? Angus cows are the top meat-producing cows. They are used for commercial purposes and makeup over 50 percent of the total commercial cow population! Angus cattle are all black, do not have horns, and have a wide forehead and slim muzzle.

  • Hereford: Also a big beef producer, the Hereford is always all red and white, but the shades of red can vary. They normally have a small, white mane running from the top of the head down to their hindquarters. Though they are not as muscular as other bulls, they have a “blocky” appearance.

  • Holstein-Friesian: The most common dairy cow, and probably the cow that you picture when you think of “cow.” This is the black and white cow that you see on many farms. Although only one of the five most common dairy cows, this one is a very popular breed because it produces the most milk.

Cow Name Ideas

Now that we’ve gone over a few of the most common bovine found on a farm, how about a few naming tips?

  • Do not name a cow that you plan to slaughter. When you give something a name, you create a personal relationship, so naming a cow that you plan to turn into food can make it harder on you or your family when the time comes.

  • If you have a lot of cows, create a theme for their names, such as different flowers, countries, dairy/beef products, famous artists, or cartoon characters.

  • What color is the cow? There are many names to be made with colors! Snowdrop, Ginger, Licorice, and Chocolate to name a few.

  • Puns are great! The word “cow” is hidden in many other words and can be turned into a cleverly humorous name. Cowntess!

  • Giving them names that indicate “small” is pretty good for cow names as cows are a whole 1,000 pounds of small!

  • Think of names that emphasize their features: spots of color, tufts of hair, or long eyelashes.

Choosing a Mooarvaleous Name

Coming up with a great cow name all depends on your personality, your cow or bull’s personality, and your relationship with the beloved bovine.

Some farmers will name every cow when they have many, and remember each name, while others will only name the ones that are their favorites. It’s entirely up to you! Lucky for you, cows won’t get jealous if you call one by a name and refer to others as simply a number.

When coming up with cow names, keep a pen and some paper nearby so you can jot down the good ones as they come to you. You never know when you will find inspiration.

In the meantime, try serenading your cows by playing a guitar and singing their favorite song: “Home on the Range.”

We got two cows, one came with a name and the other who is a bit gingery in temper had no name. We are probably going to call her Ginger or Chocolate [as she is black].

I ALWAYS name my livestock- it makes them have real value as a life instead of just mere meat. We still process, but it's nice to instill an appreciation for the life that was taken to sustain us. =)
