Pigs as Pets

Did you know pigs can actually make amazing pets?!

That's right! These unique animals can make a great addition to your family, and to prove it, I've listed a few of the common misconceptions people have about these gentle creatures.

They're Clean Animals!

Despite how they're usually depicted, pigs are actually pretty clean animals and prefer cleanliness to messiness. Mother pigs train their piglets instinctively to keep their bed and food areas away from their bathroom area, something you wouldn't even expect from your typical tabby.

When it comes to scent, some people even insist that their pet piggies smell like maple syrup! Otherwise, they smell like hay, fabric softener, or whatever their bedding smells like. So, if they smell, it's likely due to the owner not cleaning up after them. In this case, it's the owner's fault, not the pig.

They're Smart Animals!

It is said that pigs are smarter than dogs. They have shown that they have the ability to learn through observation, retain what they learn, learn quickly, and problem solve.

Training a pet pig is totally a possibility if you're interested in trying. They can be trained to respond to commands like, "come," "sit," and "no," and can even be taught tricks, like running through obstacle courses and dancing! Talk about cute!

They're Friendly Animals!

They may be in the same scientific family as wild boar, who are definitely not known for their friendly dispositions, but domestic pigs are very friendly, loving animals, who can make great companions for both young children or elderly.

Pigs enjoy listening to music and can be soothed by it. They enjoy playing and running around, but also can appreciate laying back and getting a nice back or belly message. Keep in mind though, they are very active little animals who will want frequent attention, and if they aren't getting it, they can vocally insist!

Tips for Brainstorming Pig Name Ideas

Coming up with a creative name for your unique, new addition should be easy and fun. There is a plethora of names you can choose from, and that may seem daunting at first, but these tips will help you think of great new name ideas, as well as help you narrow down some as well.

Appearance

Some people choose names according to the pig's color, such as "Brownie" or "Cocoa" for a brown piglet, or "Rosie" or "Bubble Gum" for a pink piglet. Other distinctive features can also inspire cute pig name ideas, such as having spots, i.e. "Spot" or "Patches."

Attitude

Pigs definitely have personality, so choosing a name inspired by their unique personality is certainly befitting. "Spunky," "Skipper," "Zoomer," are all cute pig names for particularly active piglets, while "Squealer" or "Barky" might be suitable for an especially vocal piggy.

Appetite

Pigs like to eat, and so do their owners. Think about some of your favorite foods, or maybe even some that your piglet might like for naming inspiration. Did you know pigs are actually pretty healthy eaters? Despite the impression they will eat anything, their favorite foods are fruits and vegetables, so names like "Butternut," "Carrots," or "Apricot" might be the ideal match for your new pal!

You can find pet name inspiration almost anywhere, from your hobbies, favorite sports teams, favorite movies, shows, or characters, or favorite places to visit. Choosing a name that perfectly suits both you and your piggy will be a cinch!

Get Your Pig Involved in Picking a Name

After looking through all those pig name ideas, you probably have a couple favorites that you might be considering now. Deciding between two or more awesome names is sometimes even harder than thinking of the names to begin with. With that said, here are some fun ways to choose a name and to enlist the help of your new piggy pal—it's their name after all!

Food Bowls:

Write down your name choices on two separate pieces of paper and attach them to different food bowls. Put two food bowls on the ground an equal distance away from your pig. Whichever food bowl they eat from first is the winner!

Name Calling:

It's not much of a game, but calling out the different names and seeing which your piggy responds to is always a great fallback plan for selecting their new name. This is also a great opportunity to test out nicknames you may use too!

Sticky Nametags:

If you're looking for a more goofy naming game, you'll love this one! Write down your name ideas on notecards and attach them to your piggy using a light-weight tape (don't want to hurt the little guy or gal!). As your piggy plays and runs around, the cards will naturally fall off. The last name standing wins!

No matter what name you pick or how you pick it, your new little piggy pal will be a great new addition to the crew!
