For the Love of Sheep

My mother grew up on a thousand-acre farm in the Midwest, and her favorite animals then, and still to this day, are the precious baby lambs. She can go on for hours talking about how playful they are, how gentle they are, how adorable they are, and how sweet their cry for their mama is. Let's just say, there are many reasons to adore these gentle little animals!

Of course, my mom grew up with these little guys all around, but did you know it's possible to care for sheep of your own, even if you don't live on a farm? If you happen to adore sheep as much as my mom does, you're in luck, because owning a pet sheep might be more possible than you ever realized!

Things to Know Before Getting a Pet Sheep

Before you bring home your first sheep, there are some things you should think about first. Here are some frequently asked questions about owning and caring for a pet sheep.

Can I keep a sheep as a pet?

Absolutely, any breed of sheep can make an excellent pet. Keep in mind, they are considered livestock, so you'll need to make sure your neighborhood/city allow livestock to be kept as pets.

Can you house-train a sheep?

If you're interested in keeping your pet sheep indoors, then you should know that the easiest way to house-break them is while they're still young. A bottle-fed lamb is much easier to house-break, while an adult sheep would likely be very difficult and worth avoiding.

How many acres do you need for a sheep?

Sheep, much like goats, don't need a lot of land to be happy. One acre can be home to up to a half dozen sheep, while flocks of 100 or more can be kept on 30 acres.

Can you keep one sheep?

You can, but you shouldn't. Sheep are social animals and thrive in groups. If you're not ready to adopt a flock of sheep, that's okay. Sheep can also enjoy the company of other animals like donkeys, goats, or dogs.

The Benefits of Raising Sheep

These sweet animals come with a fair number of benefits for their owners. If you're interested in raising sheep or expanding your current flock, here is a quick reminder of the benefits to raising sheep.

  • Wool: Sheep's wool is used in a large variety of manufacturing processes, making it an extremely sought-after and versatile fiber.
  • Milk: Sheep's milk is super nutritious, having twice the amount of calcium than cow's milk! It can also produce more cheese per fluid ounce!
  • Meat: Obviously if you're getting a sheep as a pet, this benefit is not for you, but it's good to note that meat from sheep is delicious!
  • Breeding: Also not for pet owners, but breeding sheep can be a great side income. People will buy and sell sheep for their genetics.
  • Lawn Maintenance: Like goats, sheep will graze on tall grass, working as natural lawn mowers. However, they will be much kinder to the trees than goats will be!
