Owning a Horse

There's nothing quite like owning a horse. I think I was born to love horses. I was obsessed with the thought of owning my own horse for as long as I can remember. After badgering my parents relentlessly, I got my first equine when I was eight. It was a sorrel Welsh pony named Red. A few years later, I got my first real horse, Poco.

After marrying a cattleman, we had a lot of horses! We owned mares and geldings and managed a stud, so we did some breeding, too. It was always fun naming the newborn foals, but it wasn't always an easy task.

Naming Your Horse

If you purchase a registered horse, it will already have an official name. Of course, you can give it a nickname that's shorter than the official name. Any equine you buy will probably already have a name, whether it's registered or not. Some horses know their name. If this is the case, you might not want to change it. If the horse doesn't respond to its name, you can come up with one on your own. With some work and consistency, you can teach your horse to respond to the name and even get it to come to you when called.

How do you go about selecting a good name for your horse, though? The possibilities are endless! You might choose a name based on the horse's appearance. For example, if your horse is marked by a white blaze on its head, you might choose Blaze. If it's a blue roan, you might choose Blue or Indigo. You might also choose a name based on the animal's personality, size, or the job it performs. You could also base a name on your horse's situation. Let's say, for example, you rescue a horse that's almost dead, and you nurse it back to health. You could name it Lazarus, based on the Biblical character who was brought back from the dead. Then again, you may prefer choosing a name that has nothing at all to do with any of these things.

Below, I've provided you with some suggestions. Some of the names are from mythology and literature, some came from famous horses, some are from TV and movies, some are from nature, and others are based on names of my own horses or from the horses of friends. I hope the list of names gets your mental juices flowing so that you can come up with the perfect name for your equine!

Have fun choosing a name for your new horse!

Choose a Name Wisely

Don't choose the first name you like. Make a list of your favorites before making a final decision. Does the name “fit” your four-legged companion? Can you picture yourself using the name? Once your horse, pony, mule, or donkey gets accustomed to the name, you don't need to change monikers. Use the name frequently and in a way that will give the animal a positive association. By doing so, there's a good chance your horse will learn to make the association, and it might even learn to come running when you call its name.

Jo Miller from Tennessee on August 26, 2021:

Great list of names. Now, if I ever need to name a horse, I'll know exactly where to go. Glad to see you active here. Haven't seen any posts from you in a while.

Partha Gupta from India, Kolkata on August 14, 2021:

Although I did not have any horse your hub has provided an excellent guideline to choose a name.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on August 13, 2021:

I never was lucky enough to have a horse. You certainly have given people many potential names of horses, ponies, and donkeys. I am not sure I would want to ride one called "Rascal." Ha!
