Loyal 13-Year-Old Dog Hailed a Hero for Flagging Down Cop After Elderly Dad Fell
When 84-year-old Keith Johnson was in trouble, it was his dog Gita that came to his rescue. The 13-year-old dog is now being heralded a "true hero" for doing the impossible. She miraculously managed to flag down a police officer when her dad was in trouble, ultimately saving the man's life.
John was letting Gita outside last month when "something just felt off."
Speaking with Good Morning America, he said he felt "disoriented, dizzy," — "I fell over and that's when I knocked my hip out of joint and cracked it," he explained.
The 84-year-old was left immobile for hours. The only person there to help him was Gita. So Johnson decided to turn to her and asked her to go get help.
That's when she came across Dept. Sheriff Colton Wright, who happened to be patrolling a rural, wooded area of Stevens County, a post from the Stevens County Sheriff's Department Facebook page states. When Wright saw Gita, he tried to get her into his police car, but she refused. He looked around for an owner and couldn't find anyone.
"Sensing something amiss, Wright went back to the dog which was now laying on the centerline," the post reads. When Wright tried to get the dog off the road, she took off. The police officer followed Gita and she led him to the cabin where her owner was still in trouble.
"He began checking around the area and observed an elderly male laying on the ground calling for help a short distance from the cabin," the post continues. "The 84-year-old-male, who also had other medical conditions needing regular medications, had fallen and injured his leg. He had laid there for hours and may have had serious consequences if he had not been found."
"That's your dog right there, right?" police footage obtained by GMA shows Wright asking Johnson.
"It is," Johnson replied.
"That's a good dog man, I'll tell you that," Wright told him.
"Yep, she is. She's my best friend," Johnson told
Wright was taken to the hospital and is now recovering at a rehabilitation center. USA TODAY reports that Johnson now believes he was alone for six hours, but no one could hear him calling for help because of the remote location. Which is why he told GMA that he's so incredibly thankful that he had Gita with him on that fateful day.
'I get choked up thinking about her," he said. "She knew what she was doing. I tell her I love her every time I talk to her."
