Basset Hound Cops an Attitude When Mom Catches Him with Stolen Potato

Hamilton didn't like the accusation.

Some dogs are natural born thieves. They know exactly how to get what they want. Sadly for Hamilton, a Basset Hound that has his own social media page on the internet, he's not exactly great at pulling off his crimes. Video of his latest caper has gone viral, and shows the pup getting caught red handed for a dinner theft.

Hamilton might've gotten caught, but he was certainly not going down easily.

The Basset Hound wasn't willing to give up the fight. In the footage his owner shared on TikTok, it shows the dog guarding his latest treasure with all his might. We guess his owner won't leave baked potatoes out to cool anymore, huh?

The dog growled and growled, even when his mom calmly asked him: "Hamilton, where's the potato?"

Hmm we think the Hound doth protest too much.

Of course when the dog finally did get off of the bed, his mom easily found the stolen object hidden amongst the pillows. Busted!

"Always a sweetheart when he has stolen food!" she wrote in the video's caption. She added that she knew that some might scoff at Hamilton's attitude, but there was something that people needed to understand: "I rescue dogs that others gave up on, all of my dogs are in training for their behavioral issues," she explained.

People in the comments section were laughing over Hamilton's stint as the house potato thief. "Hamilton was ready for war about that potato. It’s not even loaded," one commenter pointed out. "He said 'where’s my side of sour cream lady?!'" another commenter teased. "Hamilton is mad you skipped out on the bacon and cheese," offered up another commenter. "Hamilton said he was set up," one person chimed in.

How to Stop Your Dog From ‘Counter-Surfing'

Hamilton wasn't the first dog to nab a treat that was left out on the counter. But it's definitely not a behavior that many dog owners want their pups to continue.

The easiest way to solve the problem is to never leave anything on the counter tops — not even crumbs. If you must use the counter to let something cool, use a baby gate to keep your pup at bay.

Another method is to tell your dog to "go to your place" when you see them start sniffing around for food. Once he or she returns to their crate or bed, make sure to give them a treat so they learn they'll get rewarded for leaving counter food alone.

And finally, you can teach your dog the "leave it" command to help them drop the food.

Dogs can be a little tricky when it comes to food. There's no shame in trying a few different ways to outsmart their sticky paws.
