Boston Terrier's Delight Over Successfully Using the Doggy Door Is Pure Gold
If you've every gone through the struggle that is puppy training then you know those months can be a real pain. But there is typically a light at the end of the tunnel. Sadly for one couple, that light didn't come for quite a while after they started training their Boston Terrier to use its doggy door. So when little Daphne finally did it, the whole family had to celebrate.
Daphne's mama, Tess Nolan, happened to have her camera out and captured the moment they'd been waiting for for so long.
In all fairness, they started training Daphne to use the door a little late. But hey — when you get it, you get it.
"Daphne finally learnt at the age of 4 years old how to use the doggy door," the video's onscreen caption. "I don't know who's more excited, us or her," it states.
If you watch the video, you'll understand why she couldn't decide. The Boston Terrier was so hyped after she crossed through the doggy door flap. She jumped up and spun around in circles several times — she knew she'd done good! Meanwhile, her mom and dad also were going nuts in the background. They were cheering and jumping up and down too.
"The twirls of excitement!" Nolan wrote in the video's caption.
How to Teach Pups to Use a Doggy Door
The process of teaching your dog to use its door is a little tricky. Dog doors are a completely foreign concept to your pup — so you're going to need to have patience and treats, lots of treats.
While it might not make sense to you at first, you're going to want to install your doggy door without the flap at the start. Just to get your dog used to the doorway. Then ask a friend or family member to stand outside the door with a treat. Show your dog the treat outside the door and when they pop their head outside the door give them a treat. Make sure you praise them too!
Then you'll start throwing treats through the door so that your animal will follow. Encourage your dog to follow the treat outside the door, and then if they come right back inside reward them with another treat.
After repeating that process, you can add on the door flap. Show your dog how it works and then repeat the above exercises until they get the hang of it. Eventually you'll remove the treats as part of the process and your pup will keep using the door. Voila! Now they're ready to head to the backyard all on their own.
