Sweet Cat Surrendered to NY Shelter After Family Got a Puppy Is 'Confused and Sad'
It's always a sad thing when an animal is surrendered. But one recently surrendered cat's story is heartbreaking for a whole different reason. The animal was given up in favor of another pet. Causing people online to be absolutely furious.
The orange cat's story was shared by the Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in Poughkeepsie, New York.
As the rescue explained in a post on Facebook, Max was living a happy life with his owners, when an addition to his family changed everything.
"Max was living life as a loved family member until a new puppy arrived on the scene," they explained. "Max did not like the puppy. So Max was given to a family member."
Sadly, that family member chose to surrender Max to a local shelter, who in turn reached out to Hudson Valley for help.
Now the rescue is sharing Max's story, with hopes that someone will see it and want to give him a good home.
People in the comments section were furious at the humans who gave this sweet little kitty up. "He was not a loved family member because you don’t give your loved ones away ever. PETS are for life," wrote one commenter. "The original owner and family member deserve the same treatment given to Max times 100," someone else added. "That is so wrong ! They should all be ashamed of themselves and next watch they’ll be surrendering the puppy too," one person chimed in. "I’ll never understand abandoning a 'loved family member.' It’s truly sickening," some else added. "Especially in this situation. They could’ve trained the dog. Acclimated the animals. Instead they gave up on an animal they supposedly loved."
More About Max
If you're interested in bringing Max home, here are some important things to keep in mind about the 7-year-old cat.
"He is a sweet and easy fellow," the rescue explained in the post. He is also available for adoption. Potential adoptees can head to the Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary website and start the paperwork to bring Max home.
Max has been neutered and his vaccinations are up to date, per the organization. He is a healthy kitty, although as the rescue noted on Facebook is still reeling from the loss of his family.
"Max is confused and a bit sad," they explained. "He is used to being part of a family and he misses having a lap to curl up on, a window to sun himself in."
This is why the rescue is adamant that the next person be the right person for the animal.
"Max is a cat, not a rubber ball," they wrote. "Max is a forever boy, not a 'for-right-now' boy. He is willing to commit to YOU for life. Can YOU commit to him for life?" they asked. Here's hoping that the right person can.
