Explanation of Why Cats Sleep Near Their Owners Is Too Sweet

The reasons might surprise you!

It seems like two different worlds when cats are asleep versus when they're awake. Some felines are especially energetic and destructive--and confident about it--so it can be a surprise when they gently curl up for a nap next to their favorite person.

On Wednesday, August 1, the owner of @cat_tigrous posted a sweet and informational TikTok account about why cats sleep near their owners. The reason why is too cute, but the little tabby cat who models sleeping poses for this video is even cuter.

Aww! That makes sense that cats would sleep near their owners for safety and security, but it's still very sweet to learn that the theory is true. So if your tired cat chooses to sleep near you--you're doing a great job!

Veterinarian Stuart Hovis, DVM confirms that cats only sleep near people or animals they trust. Just like dogs, cats are at their most vulnerable while sleeping, so sleeping next to a person who cares for them can help them feel relaxed and safe. Many people can relate to that, too!

Your sleepy kitty might even take the bonding a step further and sleep directly on your chest. This could be for many reasons: to warm up with body heat, to be close to someone they love, or to hear the comforting sound of your heartbeat or voice. Isn't that sweet?

There are an almost infinite number of cat sleeping positions you might spot, but you don't need to always read into them. Certain positions or spots in the house simply might be more comfortable--just like that sun spot in the middle of the living room floor!
