Shepherd Dog and Dolphins Play With Ball in Hawaii and It’s Impossible to Resist

We're jealous of the dog!

Have you ever seen a dog play volleyball with dolphins? I hadn't either, until I came across this TikTok that Dolphin Quest posted on Saturday, September 7th. It's one of those videos that you have to see to believe!

The video starts with the Australian Shepherd entering the pool where the dolphins live. One curious dolphin notices the dog and brings a ball over, inviting them to play. The dog pushes the ball back to the dolphin, who then boops it with his nose, sending it out of the water and back towards the dog. Watch as even more dolphins join in on the fun!

Am I the only one who's jealous of this dog!? Her name is Freyja while it's on my bucket list to swim with dolphins someday, she just walks in and starts playing with them like it's no big deal! Dolphin Quest says in their caption that friendship can be found anywhere and even used the hashtag 'friendship goals'. I want to know where I can go to become friends with dolphins!

I wasn't the only one who instantly fell in love with this adorable video. @Soheil SL said simply, “Ok hi new friend!” LOL!" and Dolphin Quest replied, "As simple as that!" @Alex pointed out, "Disney, the material is writing itself." @Sarah Nicole added, "Water doggo meet land doggo!" @Steph Gillett had my favorite comment, "Me and my fiancé just watched this and said, “Maybe the world isn’t such a bad place”!"

Can Dolphins Make Friends with Other Animals?

If you watch a lot of TikToks, chances are you've seen an encounter or two between dolphins and other animals. I've seen several videos of dolphins interacting with dogs, and they're always a joy to see! But can dolphins make friends with any other animals?

According to Animal Dome, dolphins can be friendly with humans and even other animals because of their emotional intelligence, "Dolphins are friendly to humans because dolphins have a very large brain, which is where their emotional intelligence comes from, and sometimes dolphins see us as part of their pod. Dolphins have compassion and empathy for humans like dogs and some other mammals." This also can happen with animals like dogs and other dolphins that they're exposed to regularly.

I'm not sure if the dog in this video lives and/or works with these dolphins day in and day out, but clearly, they all enjoyed the interaction. Business Insider shared a story about a Golden Retriever named Gunner who became BFFs with a dolphin his mom worked with, and even 8 years later the two are still bonded.

Animals with emotional intelligence, like dogs and dolphins, can develop friendships and look for companionship with other species. What an incredible friendship to have! But both articles referenced above also served the reminder that friendly or not, dolphins are still wild animals and should be treated as such. Even though we all think of dolphins as one of the friendliest animals in the sea, they can still be dangerous.
