German Shepherd Can Hardly Contain Her Excitement When She Sees Dad Again After Long Absence

We're witnessing absolute joy.

My dog, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, had two different tail wags when greeting guests. There was her regular, normal wag when seeing new people, an indication that she was an amiable, friendly dog who was happy to greet visitors. Then there was the wag she reserved for people and animals she knew—that one was more of a full-body wag. Her whole backside would get in on the action, so eager was she to see someone she loved.

The German Shepherd in this video is initially shocked by the sight of her favorite person, but she recovers quickly, and shows him a greeting that could move a rock to tears.

“Dasha has her three favorite people and there is no mistaking who they are,” writes a woman in the caption of this adorable video of a German Shepherd greeting her long-last dad. Well, not long lost—his trip was less than two weeks, but I’m sure for poor Dasha it felt like an eternity.

In the clip, the dog is out for a walk on a leash when she catches sight of her “person” standing and waiting for her in the driveway. She freezes, staring at him for a minute while his presence registers. And then, she is overtaken by pure joy. She goes at him, wagging her tail, pressing her face up against him, coming in for hugs and kisses and cuddles. She so excited she can hardly keep still, wriggling and grinning from giant fluffy ear to giant fluffy ear.

It’s a beautiful sight to behold.

Reunited At Last

“She is such a sweet girl and is friendly to all she meets,” her mom says, “but she reserves her deepest affection for my husband, son and granddaughter. They have all argued amongst themselves what order of importance they hold, but Dasha seems to have enough love and devotion to always make each one of them feel first in her book.”

What’s most notable about this video is the way her emotions seem to change after a few moments in her tender reunion. Her excitement overcomes her and she goes from calm hugs and kisses to pure excitement. If she was willing to get a little farther away from her Dad, I bet we’d be looking at actual “zoomies.”

“The unconditional love of a dog truly is beautiful and so moving,” said one person in the comments. “If only we humans were the same. What a wonderful world it would be.”

Of course, not ever dog parent is that lucky. Some poor souls have temperamental divas on their hands, who give their parents the silent treatment if they dare to go away.

“if I left my dog for that long she would ignore me for at least two days after I got back,” says one, amused, and—dare I say it?—a little jealous.

German Shepherd Loyalty

German Shepherds have long been used as working dogs in a variety of tasks, from service dogs for the disabled to police guard dogs, and of course as shepherds for herding. German Shepherds are prized for their loyalty, courage, and intelligence, which makes them a great dog for families.

In fact, since German Shepherds are so intelligent, the most amusing part of this video is that it takes poor Dasha a few seconds to recognize her dad across the street. But she more than makes up for it when she does realize that he’s come.
