Parents Introduce German Shepherd to New Kitten and Her Terrified Reaction Is Priceless
Bringing home a new pet to meet a pet you already have can be a nerve-wracking time. That's what happened at Kayla_D's house recently when they brought home an adorable orange kitten to meet their German Shepherd. It didn't go as planned, but in the cutest way possible!
The video shows the 85-pound German Shepherd sitting on the couch near her dad. Mom puts the 1-pound kitten down, and you can tell that the pooch is terrified of the baby. Kayla shared the video at the end of September, and it immediately went viral. After watching it, you'll understand why!
Is that not the cutest thing you've ever seen?! The German Shepherd is absolutely terrified of the orange kitten! The kitten wasn't even trying to be scary or paying attention to the dog, and she was still scared!
Kayla's video got nearly 18 million views, 2.4 million likes, and 12 thousand comments. People loved the exchange between the kitten and the big scaredy cat dog! @CritneyBlark joked, "It's because it's an orange kitten, they are wild as h*llll!!!" @glitchedd shared, "I laughed and then I remembered I’m scared of spiders!" @abbi knew what Kayla was going through, "Mine is 115 pounds and he requires a full pep talk to even just walk past the cat!" and @Tiffany got 121 thousand likes when she added, "I mean there’s an entire lion on the couch what do you expect!!"
Can Dogs and Cats Get Along?
Growing up, we always had cats and dogs in our house. We never had any issues except that just like us humans do with our siblings, they sometimes fought like cats and dogs. In most cases, cats and dogs can learn to live together in (somewhat) harmony, but it can take some time.
Some dog breeds get along better with cats than others, and so you'll need to research your dog's breed to see how they feel about felines. German Shepherds usually don't have any problem with cats, though they will chase them. With a little training and patience, eventually this dog should be fine with the kitten, and it seems the kitten's already okay with the dog!
Another Pet Helpful article shared this word of caution, "Early socialization with other animals is often key for this breed, as it helps to establish friendly relations and companionship qualities at an early age. Even with these safeguards in place, however, owners should continue to monitor their German Shepherds with other pets (particularly smaller ones) as playful roughhousing can occasionally turn harmful."
While the process for Kayla to get her fur babies used to each other could be a long one, it seems she's doing the right thing by introducing them slowly. In the beginning, it's best not to leave the two alone together - always supervise their interactions. You know your pets better than anybody, so make sure to watch closely for signs of distress. If either of them is stressed out, separate them and try again later.
