Golden Retriever’s Happy Dance After Finding Hidden Dental Chew Is the Best
If there's one thing no dogs ever turn down, it's getting a treat. Boone is a Golden Retriever whose mom makes him work for his treats. One of his favorite treats is a WHIMZEES dental chew. In this video, posted at the end of May, Boone's mom hides the alligator shaped treat in the backyard and the pup has to go and hunt it down.
Set to the song See You Later Alligator, mom hides the treat under a tree in the yard. She then lets Boone out to find it. He's sniffing around but can't place it. He even runs back to mom to make sure she wasn't trying to trick him! Watch as he finally finds it because his happy dance is the cutest thing you'll see today!
I don't know which was cuter - Boone's happy dance or his adorable tail wags when he was on the mission to find his treat! I could watch him do his happy dance all day, and in fact, I watched the video more than once just to see it again! @Wellness Pet Food had my favorite comment, "Now that’s how you celebrate!!"
Dog Dental Chews & Their Alternatives
Do you give your dog dental chews? I certainly do; my dog loves her Minties and she gets one every day. It helps 'brush' her teeth, gives her something to chew on (she's a teething puppy), and freshens her dog breath.
Dental chews are important, but there are also other things that help to keep dogs' teeth healthy? Believe it or not, dry dog food does the trick. Top Dog Tricks explains, "dry dog foods' highly abrasive nature has a scrubbing action on canine teeth that helps to maintain cleanliness and general oral health," they go on to include, "Studies show that dry dog foods are also responsible for the increased production of saliva in the dog's mouth, which is known to contain immunoglobulins produced in reaction to the antigens found in the mouth." In short, dry dog foods clean their teeth naturally.
If you're looking for healthy and all natural dental chew alternatives, consider giving your pup a variety of fruits and veggies. Carrots are great because "the rough and fibrous nature of carrots basically scrubs your dog's teeth, the same way we've discussed dry dog foods do." Others to consider include cucumber, celery, apples and watermelon (all deseeded). As with any treats, feed your pup all of these in moderation; some of them are high in sugar and can cause your dog to gain weight.
A note of caution, there are some fruits and veggies that are actually toxic to dogs. Never feed your pooch onions, tomato stems or leaves, and grapes and raisins just to name a few. If you're not sure if your pet can have a certain food, talk to your vet before giving it to them. It could save your dog's life!
