California Police Department Celebrates Its First K9 Officer with Emotional Retirement Speech

This police dog paved the way for so many more.

After years of hard work in any field, retirement is well-deserved. It's a bittersweet milestone, to say the least, but its also a life change worth celebrating. At least that's what the officers at the City of Campbell Police Department believe!

These California-based cops recently celebrated a very special retirement in the most emotional way. The team's first-ever K9 officer, Lucas, is trading in his work vest for a comfy bed! On August 11, the canine hero was treated to the sweetest retirement send-off, bringing viewers to tears.

Congratulations on your retirement, Lucas! We hope you enjoy every moment of carefree fun and relaxation that you'll get from now on. You might need some time to get used to your new routines, but you'll love the easy life--we promise!

We also loved the advice that commenter @montebello road gave to the new retiree: "Happy Retirement, Officer Lucas! Thank you for your service! You have earned it!! May you now get to chase squirrels instead of chasing bad guys! It’s good to find a hobby so you don’t get bored."

That's so sweet! It's true, though; both people and dogs need things to do to keep them feeling fulfilled. For dogs, this could look like socialization, playtime with a treat-filled toy, or even learning a skill like agility. Of course, there are countless activities owners and dogs can do together, too.

For Lucas and his owner, Sgt. Magee, the fun times have already begun. Look how they celebrated the K9's last day of work back in July!

How fun! Between this German Sheperd's last day on the job and his official retirement ceremony, he's gotten a taste of the fun that's to come. And after several years with both the Oakland Police Department and the Campbell Police Department, he deserves every minute of it.

This dedicated K9 was also the very first canine officer for the city of Campbell, so he's leaving behind more of a legacy than he realizes. Local resident and commenter @carolhky agrees, saying "I remember when K9 Lucas came to the Campbell PD. He is my favorite K9 and a trailblazer. Happy and well-deserved retirement." We couldn't have said it better ourselves! Lucas seems like a very good boy, and we're so excited for him to simply be a dog.

Congratulations, K9 Lucas, and thank you for your service!
