Kitten 'Achieving Consciousness' After Spotting Himself in Mirror for the First Time Is Priceless
There are special milestones and 'firsts' that all pet parents get to look forward to. Whether you rescued a senior pet or bought a tiny kitten, you'll get to share so many meaningful moments with your feline friend. A few 'firsts', however, simply can't be replicated after kittenhood.
Just ask @eoddoe0! This brand-new kitten owner witnessed one of the most iconic existential crises that a young cat can experience: spotting themselves in the mirror for the first time. This shocking interaction always results in a silly response from the confused kitten, and this gray kitty's experience was no different. He didn't know what to think!
The kitten's June 24 encounter has racked up over 5 million views, and once you see him, you'll understand why. His surprised response is so funny that it's actually impressive!
OMG! This poor kitten was in full fight-flight-freeze mode! I wish there was a way to translate animals' thoughts into words humans could understand because this new kitten's reaction would be so funny to tap into. Is he terrified? Is he confused? It looks like he's a bit of both!
"Aww yes, their first mirror time," commented @adoor2023. "Always a spicy first meeting." No kidding! This gray kitten looked ready to throw paws with the imposter in the mirror, and no one blamed him one bit. The concept of a reflection isn't easy for little ones to grasp!
If this stunned kitten wasn't transfixed by the mirror, I'd be worried about how long he stood statue-still. But like the cat owner said in the video's description, "he achieved consciousness because of this and he's doing well." Still, one question remains: how did you get him to snap out of it?
Why Do Mirrors Freak Out Pets?
While some dogs and cats don't seem to notice anything unusual when they look at a mirror, other pets are transfixed, surprised, or confused by their reflections. No matter how many times an owner tells their furry friend, "that's you," you just can't force an animal's brain to make the connection. Oh well!
Some animals notice their reflection in the mirror but perceive it as a second cat or dog. They might try to sniff their reflection or even play with it, but odds are--they don't know they're looking at themselves. And seeing a random stranger in your home can be shocking, to say the least--even if that stranger looks exactly like you and copies everything you do!
