Mama Bear and Cubs Drink from Front Yard Fountain As Heat Wave Bakes California

Hopefully they stay hydrated!

Summertime is great, but the heat that comes along with it isn't quite as fun. Unfortunately, people aren't the only ones who are struggling with the heat wave that's baking a lot of the country this summer.

Wildlife is also looking for water and shade as the temperatures stay well above average, and one California resident even caught the moment a family of black bears drank from her yard fountain. ABC 7 News shares the bittersweet footage.

Wow, Mama bear and her babies were really close to the house! As adorable as the little bear cubs are--and as fascinating as they are to watch--it's concerning that the bears have to enter backyards just to find water.

This video was shot in Sierra Madre, California--a city near Los Angeles that's actually seeing an increase in bear sightings. Black bears are needing to venture closer and closer to human homes thanks to the high temperatures and scarcity of water. Sierra Madre police told ABC that they responded to several bear calls in the span of one week. In one instance, a bear even entered someone's home!

Although no one can control where bears go and what they do, residents in bear country can take a few steps toward preventing bears from taking interest. Securing trash cans, picking up fallen fruit off trees, and removing all food and wrappers from cars are just a few examples. Remember to secure any pet doors, too! You never know who might follow a scent right into your home.
