Confused Teenage Manatee Wants Kayak to Be His Girlfriend
One of the ways you can see gorgeous manatees in Florida is by renting a kayak and gently paddling in the warm waters where manatees are present. If you've very lucky, one of these gentle giants may even come up to your kayak.
If you're like me, you maybe assumed that when this happened it was because the manatee loved humans and wanted to say hello. The reality of the situation may be a bit more spicy than that!
The hilarious video was shared by the TikTok account for @Wetrabbitkayaks and it explains, "Manatees have poor eyesight. Basically, they can see colors and shapes up close just enough to find food, but thats about it. Because of the shape, size and colors of our kayaks and the glass bottom resembling an underbelly, we often get mistaken for manatees when a young male is feelin’ frisky."
Oh dear! That's not awkward at all! TikTok users feel the same and one person said, "He saw that big boat bottom and made his move." Oh no, LOL! Another added, "he said COME HERE GIRL!!!"
I just adore manatees but we all know you aren't supposed to touch them but I would personally have a very difficult time not breaking that rule! Can't we just quickly hug one? I guess not!
These animals are so amazing and there are a few places where you can have your very own close encounter with these potatoes of the sea!
Where You Can See Florida Manatees
The best time to see manatees is generally November through March, when manatees usually cluster around warm-water sources. The Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, Florida has observation decks at the park where you can view these beautiful animals.
If you encounter wild manatees while swimming, you can never touch them. The Crystal River and Kings Bay area is the only area in Florida where swimmers are monitored around manatees. The website explains, "Avoid excessive noise and splashing if a manatee appears nearby. The manatee may be resting and may surface without being aware of your presence. Noise and activity may startle the animal awake, which may put it in harm’s way if it is frightened and leaves the area."
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has a cohesive list about where people can view manatees.
I don't know about you, but that's for sure on my bucket list.
