Mom's Pre-Walk Pep Talk for Golden Retriever Ends in the Cutest Chaos

He didn't understand the assignment.

If you have a high-energy dog, then you know walks can get sort of crazy really fast. From the moment you step outside, your dog is speeding around or chasing squirrels, which is why one woman thought she'd have a heart-to-heart with her Golden before they left the house.

The pet owner really gave it her best shot. She sat her dog Angus down and sincerely tried to give him a pep-talk.

The dog mama had a few rules she wanted to lay down.

"We are going to stay clean today," she said in the clip. "We are not going to go swimming. We are going to avoid any dirt or sand piles. And we are not going to roll in anything that is deceased."

Sounds very reasonable — to us. To her Golden Retriever Angus, it sadly became a challenge. The video then cuts to the Golden running amuck. We guess the dog didn't exactly get the message.

"Just a little pre-walk pep talk. Went flawlessly if you ask me," she joked in the caption.

Sadly, people in the comments section could see how the woman's little talk didn't take. "I think he misunderstood. He thought YOU wanted to stay clean," joked one commenter. "He took all of your suggestions seriously for the best possible walk!" another person exclaimed. "I’m pretty sure the pre-walk look was, 'you do not know what you are talking about lady,'" a third person teased.

Even the mom had to agree that it seems unlikely that Angus was taking her words in. "All he heard was 'wah wah wah wah wah,'" she wrote.

Getting Your Dog to Listen to You

In this case, we have a small suspicion that Angus' owner didn't exactly mind her pup going rogue. But if you do want to get your dog to listen, here are some handy tips and tricks.

One reason why dogs tend not to listen is that they have a surplus of energy. That might mean taking slightly longer walks so that they'll be less likely to be distracted when you give them a command.

You also want to be consistent with your commands too. You want your messaging to be consistent, otherwise they may not understand what you want them to do. Be on the same page with any other members of your family about how you're going to train your pup, that way there aren't any mixed signals.

The main thing you want when it comes to your animal is patience. It's not easy, but very crucial if you want your dog to take you seriously.
