Watch as Mother and Family Come Together To Protect a Baby Elephant Who Was Pushed off His Feet
Talk about an incredible experience! @Isambane Camp shared a video in August 2023 of a tense situation that their guests became a part of when a herd of elephants got spooked. I could feel my blood pressure rising just watching it!
The video starts with one of the guests recording a herd of elephants, including a cute little baby just minding its own business. Out of nowhere one of the huge adult male elephants rushes forward, pushing the baby off of its feet. Mother and other adults quickly rush towards the baby, surrounding it to protect it. All of them are now in defense mode and continue to guard the baby while flapping their ears to show that they weren't comfortable with what was going on.
Wow! What an incredible encounter! @Isambane Camp is a luxury safari camp located in South Africa. They write in the caption that the guests were only about 6 feet away from the elephants when it happened. It's clear everybody was tense, including the elephants. You can hear the guide trying to calm everybody down, and it seems to be working.
In another video the camp shared, the guide explains why they think the elephant reacted that way. It could have been because they felt boxed in by the two vehicles that were there or by an approaching vehicle that had its engine on. Clearly the elephants weren't happy with people being so close; the little baby just happened to be in the adult's way when he tried to let the humans know to back off.
Commenters were so impressed how quickly the family rallied around to protect the terrified calf. I guess mama bears aren't just bears and humans...all mamas are the same!
