Serene Video of Polar Bear Napping on a Rock Has People in Their Feelings
The planet is so much bigger than us. Like a Polar Bear online that has people absolutely smitten. The little guy was taking a wee bit of a nap on top of a rock. How neat! It honestly seems like a pretty nice nap spot. We wonder if there's a little space for a human to sneak in there — just a thought.
Shared by NatGeo, the footage of the Polar Bear looks so peaceful. He was totally hitting the zzzz's.
Oh to be a Polar Bear taking a nap in the middle of the Arctic. Is there anything better? The video shows the bear deep in slumberland. We wonder what he was dreaming about. We bet it was dinner. Rest well, little guy. We know you need it.
"Hello there—we spy a not-so-little Arctic snoozer," the video's caption reads
People in the comments section were smitten with the sleeping bear. "Someone give hims a blanky," wrote one person. "Why does this make me want to cry?" another commenter wondered. "Yea...I'd risk my life for a snuggle," one commenter joked. "My toxic trait is I think he’s lonely and sad and he needs me to cuddle him," teased someone else.
Polar Bears Are Vulnerable to Extinction
Many people pointed out that this was more than just a cute video. It was actually a pretty depressing reminder that Polar Bears' natural habitat is being destroyed. Climate change has been the biggest threat to the Arctic sea ice that they live on.
According to the World Wildlife Foundation, the arctic has been heating up twice as fast as anywhere else on the planet. Because of this increase, the Arctic will shrink about 14% per decade. That's lightning fast! The Arctic has lost about 770,000 square miles, compared to the median sea ice measured between 1981 to 2010. If you need to visualize just how huge that is, it's about the same size as Alaska and California combined.
It's not just bad for the planet, but it's terrible for the Polar Bear population. Because of climate change, ice forms and melts with less time in-between, giving the Polar Bears less time to hunt seals. In times when seals are scarce, Polar Bears really suffer. It can cause malnutrition, and unhealthy bears can lead to lower reproduction rates. Cubs also suffer when there's no food. The main cause of cub death is lack of food or lack of fat from their nursing mothers.
This is why it's so important to protect the Arctic. We want little guys like these to keep having sweet dreams.
