Adorable Shih-Tzu Puppy Learning to Fetch Is Too Cute to Handle

The pup is so tiny!

Bringing home a new puppy is a fun time for a family. It's also a lot of work. Puppies need to be potty trained, learn basic commands, and settle into a routine. I know because we brought a puppy home in March! Penny is the cutest Shih-Tzu puppy you've ever seen, and her mom shared a video in mid-June of her dad teaching her to play fetch, and it'll make you smile!

Penny is tiny - she's not much bigger than the ball her dad is throwing for her to fetch - and she seemed to pick up on the game very quickly. Dad throws the ball, and she adorably runs after it and picks it up. Her tail wags proudly as she brings the ball back to dad. She even knows how to 'drop it'!

In the caption, Penny's mom swoons about what a great dog dad Penny has, and after watching some of the other videos, I agree! People left hundreds of comments about how cute Penny is (they're not wrong) and how their Shih-Tzus also love to chase the ball. @Jen shared, "Shih-Tzus are the best dogs. My boy loves to play fetch." and @Bernadette added, "Nice job… taking the time now makes for a happy well-behaved dog. Good for her and others!"

Do Shih-Tzus Make Good Pets?

After watching Penny's video and seeing how cute she is, I immediately started doing research to learn more about the breed because I want one of my own! Shih-Tzus are known for being a friendly and cheerful dogs, and in fact they are one of the most affectionate dog breeds out there. Do they make good pets? Well, it depends on who you ask, but overall, it seems like they sure do!

Shih-Tzus are very outgoing and playful and love their families. One thing to consider before bringing one home is their size; most weigh just 9 to 16 pounds at maturity, so they may not be the best dog for a home with very small children. Children may not pay attention to the tiny pooch and can easily step on or fall on the dog and injure it without even trying.

From an energy standpoint they seem to be versatile dogs because they can be lively and very active one minute, then ready to be a couch potato the next. Since they only require moderate exercise, they are the perfect fit for those of us who also enjoy chilling at home instead of being active, but they are always up for an outdoors adventure.

Shih-Tzus tend to be attention hogs and require lots of attention and a strong human connection. This makes sense because they're considered one of the best companion dog breeds, and love being around their humans. If they don't get that attention, they can become destructive, so make sure to have plenty of toys and chews to keep them occupied.

Is a Shih-Tzu right for your family? Make sure to do your research to learn about the breed's health, temperament, and grooming and exercise requirements to find out if they fit into your family's lifestyle.
