Staffordshire Bull Terrier's First-Ever Howl at 7 Years Old Is As Sweet as It Gets

Sirens woke him up from a nap!

It's completely normal for some dogs to be more vocal than others. Just look at Siberian Huskies! These professional singers are just as great at performing opera as they are at pullng a sled or running long distances, but they're far from the only dogs who make noise. Any dog could howl, growl, or bark, but it's so much more special when a normally quiet dog lets out a little sound in the heat of the moment.

That's precisely what happened to Buddy the Boy, a precious Staffordshire Bull Terrier who finally let out his first howl at seven years old. He had been deep asleep when a firetruck's siren woke him up, and he couldn't help himself from joining in. It's so lucky that his Mom had her camera nearby!

Food job, Buddy! Those howls are so pristine and priceless. It's interesting to consider why he finally chose to howl out loud seven years into life, but I know his mom is just thankful to have heard it in the first place. She's not the only one who's been through this experience, either!

"My longhair Staffordshire Terrier didn’t make a sound for four years. They went to play with a new dog and learned to howl and bark within an hour." That's amazing! Dogs can be incredibly fast learners at times, especially when it benefits them in one way or another. Howling is a form of canine communication, so it makes sense that a dog could learn this behavior more easily by watching and listening to others.

This sweet Staffie dog seemed equally confused and proud that the noise he heard came from his own mouth. He'; get used to it in time, but it's not an overnight process.

Why Do Dogs Howl?

Here's the gist: Dogs howl as a form of communication from one pup to another. It can mean anything from 'Back off!' to 'Play with me!' so it's up to you to determine what your pup is asking for based on other canine body language signs

If your dog is howling at you, particularly at night, they may think you're ignoring them because you can't see them. This tends to settle once a dog finds their ideal nighttime routine, but you can still hear howling during the day if your pup is lonely, bored, or nervous.

If your pup is asking for attention, howling is usually a last resort. It's an extremely loud sound that carries further in the air, so there's a reason it's so startling to you- especially if your dog is normally quiet!
