UK Kitty Sets World's Record for Having the 'Loudest Purr'

Guinness World Records awarded the distinction.

Hearing your cat purr is one of the most lovely sounds in the world, which is why Nicole Spink, of Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK, must be pretty overjoyed this morning, October 17.

Nicole's beautiful 14-year-old tabby cat, Bella, was just awarded the Guinness Book of World Records award for having the loudest purr.

Guinness World Records explains, "Registering a purr that measured 54.59 decibels, she achieved the noisy record for the world’s loudest purr by a domestic cat (living). To put this into context, that’s similar to the sound of a kettle boiling and not too far off the sound of your washing machine."

We would have no complaints cuddling up to that sound!

Bella's owner explains that Bella purrs all day long, whether she is being cuddled, or fed, or even at the veterinarian office. "Some vets have made comments about how she is the only cat they’ve ever had purr in there.”

How did they measure this adorable purr? Guinness explains, "Bella's record-breaking purr was recorded and measured by independent specialist sound engineers, and approved by our official Adjudicator, Dave Wilson."

As per the certified instructions, the sound level meter used for the attempt was kept at a one-metre distance from Bella, as well as one-metre distance from the ground.

Cats purr for many reasons, and the primary ones are to convey contentment and relaxation. Cats may purr when they are being petted, resting, or cuddling with their owners. Purring is believed to have some healing properties when a cat is injured. The vibrations produced during purring may stimulate the release of endorphins, which can help reduce pain and promote healing.

Congratulations to this beautiful senior cat and may Bella have many more years of purring ahead of her!
