TikToker's Explanation of Why Dogs Lick Their Owners Is Too Cute

You likely don't think twice when your dog licks up something yummy, but it's a bit more puzzling when they start to lick you. Some pup parents think it's simply a sign of affection--and they're not necessarily wrong--but there are multiple reasons why a dog might lick someone.

Luckily, dog owner @digitdax took to TikTok to share reasons why pups lick people, and the reasons are surprisingly adorable. Even when a dog is obsessively licking from anxiety, it means something that they chose to lick you!

Aww! We knew licking could be a sign of love from a dog, but this is way cuter than we were expecting. Whether a pup is looking for attention or simply seeking comfort, it's so precious that they turn to their beloved owner.

Of course, we can't forget about the universally agreed upon 6th reason that @calliemarie07 left in the comments: "6. You just put lotion on." LMAO! Many dogs do enjoy licking lotion, though it should go without saying that this isn't the best for their health. After all, lotions aren't food!

As sweet as this video is, a few dog owners bring up an important point that licking isn't always a positive behavior. @Iyamgibsonbean wrote, "You forgot appeasement licks where they are asking for space and to not be touched." That's true! Licking can be an appeasement behavior in a number of situations, but it can even be an indicator of pain.

"Also excessive licking can be an indication of pain," @6ksisane said. "My Dasch has this odd way of coming to my lap and not leaving and licking when she’s in pain." That's so great you were able to observe and understand what she was trying to tell you! That's not always easy to do, especially when behaviors like licking can have so many causes.
