It is quite normal for the mother dog to not want other dogs around after she has whelped. The mother dog is protective as powerful hormones are released which are meant for her to take care of her puppies. Some dogs may show protective behaviors as well towards humans which may cause them to growl when humans come near, but just because she doesn't want your male dog near doesn't necessarily mean she won't want you near. Many new mothers will accept their owners near. However, some in the first few days may growl. Now, if there are a lot of people coming over, this can bother her and stress her, so please keep her in a quiet area away from too much commotion.
