We are thinking of getting an older dog. My parents work all week, and the dog will be left alone for at least six hours a day during the week whilst I'm at school from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm. We plan on walking the dog one to two times before school, and another two times after school. My family are really active and will have lots of time at the weekend for the dog. Do you think we should invest in a dog walker to walk the dog dog the week? Also, which breeds do you suggest?
Being alone for six hours will be okay for many dog breeds, so you do not have to get a dog walker. (Your dog would really appreciate it though!) If I were you, I would definitely recommend a house dog, not a breed that is bred to work on a farm like a Border Collie or an Australian Cattle Dog. Think a low-energy, lazy kind of dog. There are a lot of good choices, depending on what size you like. Any of the dogs on this list are good, or do a search and look at some of the other lazy dog breeds available.
